Firmware update and file number

Greetings to everyone. I believe that this my first post here, I am a frequent lurker but I mainly contribute to dpreview under the name of Wagga.

I posted this question on dpreview but the server seems to be stuck at the moment and I am impatient to get an answer:

I installed the new firmware for the K10D. It went smoothly.

Then I took the SD card from my *istDS and put it into the K10D. Big mistake: the IMGP number jumped from IMGP0551.DNG to IMGP8660.JPG.

I've reset the camera, changed the number on the card, reformatted... the camera keeps incrementing after 8660.
Any ideas to put the "counter" back to 0551 on the K10D?

If you swap cards from different cameras, does this alter the number sequence?

Sorry for crossposting and thanks, for any clue.

Someone over at DPR had the same problem, and I think it was Jens, had a workaround for it. When the server comes back up try a search over there.

I've found the fix

Thanks Alan.

Here's the reply I posted on DPR:

For those who are going to experience the problem, here's the fix:
- go to the Recording Mode menu, Memory
- tick off "file number"
- on the computer, rename a shot on the SD card with the desired number

- put the card back in the camera, take a shot. It is now incrementing from the new number.
- go back in the menu and tick "file number".

Is that Wagga as in Wagga Wagga NSW?

Hi Rolly, this is the one indeed.

It's an (unconscious ?) tribute to all the years I spent in Australia. Not that I particularly know Wagga-Wagga, but it was the first pseudo that jumped to my mind. You cant' escape your past!

I know Wagga Wagga. That is one of the 3 most prevalent areas in australia with community acquired MRSA. Apparently the emergency department in Wagga Wagga has 40% of their patients colonised with this bug.

It is a small town with great museum and library. A few shops as I could recall.

I used to drive there from Wodonga for a drive

From my experience, this renumbering happens when you swap cards that have images from the old camera on it. If the card is blank, it shouldn't happen.

Just wondering I am getting the K10 soon.. YAHOOO. anyway I always when using the DS Download the pictures then delete off the card before re inserting the card. I am gonna assume when I now have two cameras as long as the card is blank when inserted in what ever camera the counter will be fine? anyone disagree or have any helpful hints.
