HD Pentax 1.4x TC & Mixed Lenses Pictures

Hi.

today I received the new Pentax Teleconverter. Since I read some talk about image quality that we can get using the new TC with different lenses, I'd like to show you some of my first results. Focal length and aperture of the exif data are modified for the first two Pentax lenses (Pentax K-5 Firmware-Version 1.16), DNG-files developed using capture one pro 7:

TC + smc PENTAX-DA 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 ED AL [IF] DC WR

ISO 800, 1/200s, f/8, 161mm (TC-modified)

TC + smc PENTAX-D FA Macro 100mm F2.8 WR

ISO 80, 1/50s, f/4, 140mm (TC-modified)

ISO 80, 1/320s, f4 [ -> f5.6], 100mm [-> 140mm]

TC + VIVITAR Serie 1 70-210mm F2.8-4.0 Macro

ISO 400, 1/200s, f/6.3, f not modified in exif data, focal length given manually for SR - not modified using the TC

TC + smc PENTAX-M 50mm F1.7

ISO 80, 1/250s, f/1.7 or f/2.8, focal length given manually for SR - f not modified using the TC

ISO 80, 1/125s, f/1.7, lowest distance ~ 0.45m, focal length given manually for SR - f not modified using the TC

Does anyone like to show other pictures captured like these?

Regards, acoufap

P.s. Some data of image capture added.

It does confirm that depth of field is razor thin in most of these shots. In the first daffodil, the top of the stamen is in focus but the nearer edge of the corolla is not.

Yes, all pictures are shot with aperture wide open, except the one with the Vivitar lens. Here are too additional pictures taken this morning with my old manual Pentax M28 lens.

smc PENTAX-M 28mm F2.8

ISO 80, f2.8 -> f4 with TC), 1/320s, lowest distance < 0.3m

ISO 80, f2.8 (-> f4 with TC), 1/1000s, low distance

I read that TCs doesn't perform with wide angle lenses. The results are much better than I expected.

I'm sure it's great, but turning my 50 into a 70 for that kind of cash does not seem worth it to me.

I guess I don't have enough primes yet to find it worth that much cash.

You're right. It's a lot of money. For me, it was a must have, because I get some really nice opportunities with my collection of lenses:
  • for some focal lengths faster solutions than with my 18-135mm zoom
  • noticeable magnification for my 100mm macro lens
  • great reach with the Vivitar S1 70-210mm zoom

I think some day I'll buy the DA 300 to get a real great combination in IQ and reach.

I'm happy that I bought this TC and I can say that it's a really nice crafted product. I love such things .

I hope it is the right thread to ask.

Has anybody tried the Pentax HD 1.4x TC with the Sigma 100-300/f4 APO DG?

I use the lens with the Sigma 1.4x APO DG and can't find any sample images of the lens with the Pentax TC. I'm thinking about to upgrade from Sigma TC to Pentax, but is it worth it?

That wouldn't make sense to me. To my mind it's more important to match the TC to the lens than the body. That's a general rule and may be wrong in this case (but it would have to be very wrong to make the change worthwhile.)

You are right and the Sigma TC is pretty good. But I am asking myself if the Pentax TC is similar or better in IQ? And because I would really like if the K-3 shows the right aperture and works with right FL so I could use shake reduction due to missing OS of the lens.

And here I thought the TC wasn't supposed to work with the 18-135...

I don’t think that it was said that the TC wasn't supposed to work with the 18-135.

What I understood was:
  • it is not listed in the set of lenses that damage the TC (really important)
  • it is not listed in the TC compatible list. I conclude that it is not fast enough and the autofocus of some cameras won't work without flaws under usual conditions. Under the conditions I captured the photos using the K-5, the autofocus worked without problems.

Below you see two more pictures taken with fastest apertures at the extrem ends of the zoom range.

First: Pentax DA 18-135, DA TC1.4, 25.2mm@f/4.5
Second: Pentax DA 18-135, DA TC1.4, 189mm@f/8 -> very very slow wide open!

I may have to give it a try. It shore would be nice to get be able to get to 200mm with the 18-135 and TC.

We took a drive along Costello Creek in the park. It was getting a little dark so not the best shooting conditions but still we saw lots of wildlife.. some of it from very far away.

A-400 with 1.4 TC

Some of it a bit closer...

DA*60-250 with 1.4 TC.

Testing our Sigma 18-250 with the TC, because I'm thinking of taking just the Sigma and 21 and 40XS on a trip.

Long (50 feet away...)

In macro mode...

And some random HD DA 1.4 TC images taken previously... probably with the 60-250.
