Saw the Pentax K-50 being sold at Target

I was at a Target in Seattle, WA and happened to walk by the camera aisle in the electronics dept when I spotted several K-50s for sale. It was the kit with the 18-55 DAL WR lens and I think it was being sold for $550. That was the first time I have seen a Pentax DSLR being sold in a major brick and mortar retail establishment in years. Let's hope this trend continues.

Kidding!

Last time I was in Texas, I saw a K-30, K-50, WG-3 and a generic Pentax P&S at HEB. They're gradually gaining ground.

Dang, now I wish I had gone over and looked around the HEB store next to our hotel in Austin last week... Would have been nice to actually handle a K-30....

Jim,
The K-30 is nice in the hand. I wish they had carried its general design over to the K-50.

Hmm, that probably would have resulted in some indignation - as in Pentax has artificially jacked up the highest ISO and put a new model label on the camera. Perhaps some other function was added that I missed. Although I personally don't feel strongly about the two camera styles (other than a typical Pentaxian response of enjoying being a contrarian with the K-30), only price would have swayed me between the two models.

According to their website, it says that the K-50 is available for in store pickup. I did a search for stores with availability in my area and there were none. I changed location to Houston and there were a few stores. It looks like they are stocked in select stores.

The more people who use Pentax, the better... more lenses and accessories will be made as well as a better second hand market (which outside of this site really is terrible for modern Pentax gear at the moment)

I just saw it myself down here in South Florida too. I have to say that I was unimpressed with it. The view through the finder looked smaller than the competing entry-level Nikon and not as clear. Maybe it was defective due to customer handling esp the focus ring on the kit lens, it was hard to see snap in focus (manually - camera didn't have power). Construction also looks too much of "me too" of Canikon. Hopefully Ricoh can come up with more distinctive & appealing designs to separate it from the rest.

Checked and my local target here in South Dakota has them too - but it is in a box, in the display cabinet below the ones on display, not on display :-/ Don't think they will sell many when it's the only camera you can't play with...

Amazing. I have compared against the D5200 and found the K-50 finder to be both larger and brighter.

The website for Target doesn't show Pentax (anything really) being available in store or available for pickup in the Los Angeles area.

The Target website shows the K50 in stock at only one store in the Dallas-Ft Worth area at this time. Nearly all other Pentax products are only available online.

Yeah I know I was expecting this too, but the view through 3100 looked much better to me. Maybe the K-50 has a different focus screen from let's say a K-20, but I found (manual) focus with the kit zoom difficult to focus. It just didn't "snap" in like I thought it should. For comparison the Rebels were even worse to manually focus with an even smaller viewfinder. It's strange because the specs are def in favor of the Pentax. Anyway it's good to see that Ricoh is going mainstream with the Pentax brand!
