K-500 is discontinued?

Adorama show the Pentax K-500 in their discontinued session. Is that it for the entry level Pentax DSLR offering? I really thought it was going to sell well, given the quality/price ratio.

While I don't know the answer to the question it had crossed my mind when it was on sale simultaneously at Amazon and B&H recently for $399. If it is discontinued I hope that a similar model with the few missing features the 500 lacked is on its way.

Or maybe they realized that it wasn't that much of a difference in price between it and the K-50 model that has WR and AF confirmation points in the VF, so many consumers may have decided to pay the extra $100 (or less) to get the K-50...

With the K-500, it comes with an 18-55mm lens all for $400. To get a K-50 with an 18-55mm lens, it costs about $200 more, at $600, a 50% markup!

yes, you're right about that. I didn't factor in the cost of the lens. I was looking at the K-50's body-only price, which is hovering around $500 these days. although a used 18-55 WR can be purchased for less than $100. nevertheless, at $399 with a kit lens, that's a great deal for the K-500.

Interestingly, the K500 is not listed on the Ricoh Imaging Japan site as either a current camera or as discontinued!
Perhaps it never really existed and we just thought it did.
Which makes it very interesting for those who ponied up money for it from retailers who advertised the K500 for sale.

I believe they said the k-500 was not going to be sold in the Japanese market.

Yep. Thanks, my error. I checked the Japan site thinking it would be most up to date. Other Ricoh sites, at least the others that I have now looked at, still show K500as a current product.

That $400 figure is a $150 discount from retail at least according to one prominent online retailer. Maybe that's a good clue in itself the K-500 is discontinued.

Please keep in mind, that the difference between K50 and K500 is more than just the wr body. It is also

Wr lens
Electronic horizon
Af point confirmation in the viewfinder

The K500 has an Af confirmation (the green hexagon), but does not show which point it has focussed on. I think this is a real disadvantage.

Anyway: the K500 ist the best entry level dslr in the market
