Posiible problem or is it me?

Greetings to all,
I am new to DSLR photography so it could be me but, I took this photo with my new K100d Super using an old SMC Pentax-M 200mm lens.

If I use the AE-L as suggested, the camera tends to overexpose the shot. This shot was done all manually, no AE-L exposure. Today, I was trying to use my kit lens to photograph my other lenses and the camera insisted on using the flash even though that overexposed the shots. I had to switch to manual exposure to kill the flash.
So is it me or might there be a problem with my camera? Any help suggestions would be most appreciated.
Thanks,
X

What mode were you before you switched to manual? If you were in green mode, or a picture mode, the camera will set parameters that you can not change. Try in P mode.

Couldn't you just close the flash?

Just use P, TV, AV, and M mode to have control over the flash.

One of the first things I've done to any camera I've owned with the exception of my Sigma is put the flash onto manual.
They usually feel they have to fire before it's really necessary.
