*istDS and manual lenses: M42 focus confirmation

Bought a *istDS yesterday, want to use it with old manual lenses, but ran into some problems:

edit: problems mentioned below 'almost' solved: K lenses without 'A' position now working ( after setting: 'using aperture ring to 'allowed' )
one problem however persists: NO focus confirmation with M42 lenses! ( I do get focus confirmation with K mount lenses, but own many more M42 lenses )

  1. M42 lenses exposure work alright in Av mode, but I do not get focus confirmation
  2. K lens with 'A' position work well in Av mode, aperture can be preset on camera and shutter speed will be chosen bycamera, focus confirmation works.
  3. K lens without 'A' position don't work at all in any mode, Av--- keeps on flashing, exposure, pressing the shutter release does not cause any reaction, hitting the AE-L button after half pressing shutter release does not cause any reaction, lense's aperture at any setting will open to max. after being mounted.

I wanted to have a lightweight Pentax body with high ISO, *istD, *istDS and K100D ( and K100D Super ) was my choice ( not wanting to go for the K20D for weight and prize ).
I once had a K100D Super for a trying out my manual lenses and it worked just fiine, pushing the AE-L button would do the metering on K lenses.
Is there something I do wrong on the *istDS, some setting I must change?

thank you for any information.
- please consider that i do NOT have any manual for reference ( why? see my thread: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-dslr-discussion/25902-istd-k100.html - would be grateful for help on this as well )

cheers,
Andreas

Well I guess first off...what is your menu setting for AF? If it's not on the shutter button (but on the AF button, for example) focus confirm won't work when you half press the shutter. There is a menu for it under "custom setting" -> AF by press half way, and also check AF button function.

Then keep scrolling down, till you get to Using aperture ring -> Permitted.

Hopefully your menus are the same as the K10

thank's a lot Ryan,
after your suggestion I went back to the menu I just found the correct menu setting:

here on the *stDS it is called: 'FI with S lens used > 2 available'
which is the menu item just above the: 'using aperture ring > 2 permitted'

furthermore, does anyone know what the following settings do?:

'meter operaating time', choices: 10 sec., 3 sec. , 30 sec.
'AE-L with AF locked', the choices being: 'off' and 'on'
AE-L button on M exposure > choices: 1: Program Line' 2:Tv shift 3: Av shift - am I correct that for use of manual lenses I should bestvset it to 1: Program Line?

thank's for any further help!

cheers,
Andreas

For lenses with no "A" setting on the aperture ring, you want to set this to "TV shift" that way when you hit the AE-L button, it will stop down the lens, and set your shutter speed for you.. Now, I have no M42 lenses, so I don't know what the setting would be for those, I am referring to M K-mount type lenses.
