KEH "Ugly"?

Would you consider buying an "ugly" lens from KEH? Unfortunately, they lump physical condition and optical condition in the same category. I don't think many of us would mind buying a physically ugly lens if it produced great images.

The rating system at KEH is very harsh. I've bought some BGN lenses and thought they should have been rated as very good condition but have never had the guts to try an ugly.

I would buy a bargain lens from them, but you really don't know what you will get with an ugly. I don't have the guy to try either.

They've got a no-questions 2 week return policy, so if you're willing to risk the return shipping costs, why not? I haven't tried any "ugly" items yet but I would agree I would rate items in the other categories higher than they list them.

I've got BGN lenses from them; all were "very good" quality for me. I tend to think -without proof- that the ugly category is for outer appearance mostly. Since you can return the item; you can give a try, I think...

According to their site ugly is:

QuoteQuote:
"Ugly" Very rough looking. Multiple impressions in metal, excessive finish loss and brassing are likely. Glass will have marks, fungus or haze that will probably affect picture quality.
And bargain is:

QuoteQuote:

"Bargain" 70-79% of original condition. Shows more than average wear. May have dents, dings and a goodly amount of brassing and finish loss. Glass may have marks that should not affect picture quality.
So while BGN might have some marks on the glass, lens performance shouldn't be affected by them. But with UG they are stating that marks might affect image quality. I guess if the price was right I would consider camera body, external flash, tripod and other accessories from the UG category but I wouldn't probably buy lens. No matter how you look at it, lens is the most important piece.

You are always welcome to try it out and let us know :-)

I know i'll buy a BGN from KEH any day w/o hesitation (they look EX to EX+ in my book, some LN- and are only missing caps but come shipped heavily protected.
On another note, i did make the mistake to buy a "Very Good" from adorama which had coating chips missing and focus and zoom have a stiff point on a OM 35-70/3.6.
I am always afraid KEH "UG" is like Adorama's "Very Good".
If you try a UG, let us know how it came out.
