How many use back camera focus ?

Just curious, how many use AEL/AF button on the back of your camera for focusing rather than the half press of the shutter? I know some of the models have the option of using it as a separate button making AF back camera focusing on the K-5X and the K-3 a breeze but on my K-30, I can use AE lock or AF from the button. I would love to use AF on the back of my camera but I use AE lock considerably so I wish there was a way to have both options rather than an either/or.

Ever since someone mentioned how you can put the camera into tracking AF and use backbutton focus to do focus and recompose, that's all I ever use now on my k-3.

I guess I will have to get a K-3 then. But I am thinking about a K-5II so I think that I would be able to have both buttons as separates.

You should have made your question into a poll. I use shutter half-press to initiate focus.

On my K-30 I use the half shutter press to focus but have the rear AEL/AF button set to cancel the shutter focus function. This way if I ever want to focus and recompose I can do the half press on the subject I want in focus then press and hold the AEL/AF button, recompose and shoot. It may sound complicated but once you get used to it then it becomes a natural action.

It also works when you want to manually focus, especially with the 'quick shift' lenses. Focus manually, press and hold the AEL/AF button and shoot.

But there is no way to use AE lock and use AF from any other buttons set up in settings, correct ? I want back focusing but also want AE lock too, Guess I would need a different cam.

I changed from half-shutter to rear-button AF on my K-5 a few months ago and love the improvement. With a quick-shift lens I keep the camera settings on AF.C continuous mode, then solely with the rear-AF button I can jump between focus and recompose (by pressing and releasing AF), continuous focus (by holding AF), and manual focus (by not using the AF button).

I use manual focus 95% of the time, but the other 5% is back button.

Thanks for the find. For K-3 and K-5 users, it is a no brainer but for a K-30 like myself, I need to make a choice, either back camera AF or AE lock. Need to choose which one I have to give up on.

If you give up rear push AF, you still have it on the shutter release. if you give up AE Lock, the only way to lock exposure is to shoot in manual mode. The choice seems pretty obvious to me.

Shoot in manual and use the green button to set exposure. Use back-button AF.

Personally, I use back-button AF in aperture priority and use exposure comp.

Well, I will lock exposure for skies or brighter areas that I don't want to blow out. I know there are ways to accomplish this through post processing in LR, metering on the sky in manual mode, or move down a stop or two in exposure compensation, but selecting AE lock has been very simple for me to do.
