Before the Ricoh takeover, Pentax released flagship APS-C cameras on a regular 16 month cycle (K10D -> K20D -> K-7 -> K-5). Things got thrown off in the Hoya to Ricoh transistion, so we got a 2 year gap between the K-5 and K-5 II(s) (which was a relatively minor update), and then the K-3 1 year after that.

The K-5 II(s) was probably just rushed out with whatever technology improvements they had ready at the time (like the -3 EV AF) in order to get something out for Photokina 2012, and the K-3 was probably the true successor for which the technologies that were included in the K-5 II(s) were really developed for.

With that in mind, I'm fairly certain there will be no "K-3 II" (a minor update like the K-5 II), and that a successor APS-C flagship will show up somewhere between 16 months and 2 years (sometime in 2015). I definitely wouldn't expect a K-3 successor at Photokina 2014, which of course makes one wonder what they have in store. After all, in the last 4 Photokinas, Pentax has always made sure to announce something significant: in 2006, 2010 and 2012 they announced new APS-C flagships (K10D, K-5, K-5 II(s) respectively) and in 2008 they announced two DA* lenses. 2010 was also the year they announced the 645D in the spring, much like the 645Z was announced this spring.

Haha, let me get some ice for that burn!

Yes, from what they said they already developed it. The problem is that about a year ago they weren't completely happy with what they developed. They said they ran into a problem. I don't know what it was, but one of the possibilities was trouble getting satisfactory SR because it could require an image circle around 1.15x bigger than all these 35mm-format legacy lenses actually have. Alternatively they might have to crop the sensor output by about the same amount (similar to the 1.2 crop APS-H format Canon introduced a while back).

i would actually preffer a 1.2x-1.3x sensor than a FF.
I'm in for APS-H

The K-3 is a beast. It is very capable at high ISO. A PF member even argued that it is better at high-ISO than the K-5iis (hence the K-30) when you downsize your shits to 16 Mp.
Hahaha... I think you mean "shots" - the alternative sounds like a horrible compromise.
Joking aside, is it possible to select 16Mp on the K-3? On mine the next step down is 14Mp not 16.

Many of us have said that, based on experimentation.

Lenses, I'm guessing. All of them being WR.

On mine it is 16 MP. It only works in JPEGs of course.

Interesting... Are you sure of that and can you confirm it. I just looked at mine this morning. What firmware version are you running?

Only 14MP for me too. That's what the menu says. Perhaps the actual output size in pixels of the images shot that way is larger though. The menu could be inaccurate.

correction: PENTAX flagship is not K-3, it's 645D.
