The only thing we can ever be sure of is that there will be no K-4.

Yes, there is no logic to it. Toss in the K10d>K20d>K7 and how about the K100d>K100ds>K200 wasn't there a K2000?>Kx>Kr>K30 and some others. Sony, Nikon (D4, D800, D90, D7100, D3000.....), Canon (1D, 5D, 10D>20D...70D, 7D, and others), Oly (who knows?), and others are hard to follow as well. The nearest I can figure it out is that single digit numbered cameras are high end and the ones with lots of zeros are the cheaper one (generally). Dude, it's all just marketing.

Or no K9 either, I'm quite sure of that.

It is my understanding that they will soon abandon the letter-number scheme in favor of word-based names:

New Pentax Model At Photokina?

Whenever I see the *ist name, I am reminded that in my line of work, the "*" symbol is referred to as a "splat". Yes, "Splatist"...

I'd also rule out the K-9, as who wants a dog of a camera

Haha I've been thinking about this for some time, and was originally confused when I first got into Pentax. I knew the K-3 was top dog, so I figured since the K-7 was last in line in that series that the k-30 was the successor to the k-50...but it wasn't...derp. K-x, K-r.... next must be K-l because the letter r is 6 away from x and l is 6 away from r.

Just my .02 cents

Edit: Wait I forgot the K-m, so scratch my idea. No logic indeed.

sad to say, but marketing people love confusion. It creates an opportunity to up sell. K-300 k-30 k-3 is just way too easy to understand. You need to create doubt in the mind of the consumer as to what exactly they're buying so a salesman can come along and say "for just 200 dollars more you get [ad hoc feature X]"

Canon and Nikon have created a fine art out of obfuscation in their low end models.

I still think they'll go back to naming with letters.

Yeah, the K-9 and K-O will go well with Olympus OM-G.

Maybe they'll start adding letters again, but before the K. So first, there'll be the O-K, then the A-O-K, and hopefully not the D-K...
