Using Nikon/Canon mount lenses on Pentax K-500

Hi Guys,

I have a Pentax K-500 and Tamron 18-200mm lens.

I am looking at exploring bird photography so I would be using some large zoom telephoto lenses. Recently I got an offer from a Seller for Rokinon 500mm/f6.3 for Nikon.

Was just curious if it would fit into my Pentax Camera body, if yes, any adapters needed? Thanks in advance for helping

I think those need adapters anyway. T-mount adapter. Warning: that lens is crap.

The problem with adapting lenses is a) register distance and b) mount size
Canon and Nikon lenses cannot be adapted easily. There are adapters with glass elements and adapters without. The ones with glass elements are needed for certain mounts, but they degrade image quality. Best is looking for lenses with m42 mount, because these can be adapted to Pentax with simple glasless adapter. There are also some lenses that are made with universal mount and come with adapters for the different camera brands.

But that Rokinon 500mm, I am pretty sure it comes in all sorts of mounts and it is not very expensive. You can buy one "for Pentax". If I remember some reviews, it is also a pretty bad lens (the cheap tele mirror lenses have very low contrast). Rokinon lenses are made by Samyang. Is it a mirror lens or a telescope lens? Is it this one:

In addition to the other problems mentioned, this is not a zoom.

And is it manual focus only?

Not much fun for a beginner trying to get such a long lens focused on moving objects - lot of missed shots.

It is not unusual for beginners to 'want' to use long telephoto lens (at least I know I was when I started out using DLSR thinking that 400-600mm focal length would be cool ). But I soon find out that using long lens with manual focus is no joy especially with slow zoom lens. Now I would rather use a different option; that is using a M135/f3.5 lens mounted on a Q when I want to shoot with telephoto lens. It is easier to handle than using a slow 600mm lens on a DSLR.

You can't reliably use Nikon lenses on Pentax, even with an adapter. I would recommend finding the Pentax version of that lens, as it does exist.

If it is a T mount then perhaps the easiest way is to find a T2/PK adapter to use on the K-500.

Thanks.

Thanks all for your replies, yes I went through the reviews for the Lens and looks a pretty bad choice, probably look out for better options.. I am happy to have chosen a Pentax Camera as I have so many bros here to help out when in doubt..

I would recommend one of the DA 55-300mm lenses. A used DA L can be pretty cheap. You can pay some more for extra features or even the WR version
300mm is plenty, and you get AF and zoom.

Another cheap option is the older manual focus Vivitar 400mm f/5.6. They are decent performers, much better than the numerous f/6.3 lenses found everywhere. You often see them sell for less than they should. It has to be used on a sturdy tripod though. It is very difficult to handhold.
But, I agree with others that the DA 55-300mm is probably your best option. Easy to use, can be handheld, very light and compact, and good results.
