k20d High ISO test shots 200-6400

I wanted to run a series of iso test shots to share with the group. Test was indoors with ambient light. NR setting: "weakest"

This camera is amazing:

Are these 100% crops or did you resize them?

Flickr uploader resized to 2048. Also make sure you click on "All Sizes" and "original" if you want to see the largest size.

Thanks! That's what I was thinking. I didn't do anything special. Just arranged a few things on the table, set to Av (so focus variations wouldn't be an issue) and snapped some pictures. That is not even the highest jpeg quality after I converted from RAW! Anyone that says that ISO6400 is not useable on the k20d needs to get their head out of the "lab" and look at some real pictures!

BTW for those that are intersted in more info: Camera was set to PEF RAW (since I no longer shoot jpeg ) I used Pentax Photo Lab to convert with quality on "high" and tone "Natural" I used PPL instead of any other program like ACR or LR because it should be identical to what would have come out of the camera if I had shot in jpeg.

There is no NR done by camera when you shoot in RAW, right?
Was any NR done during PP by PPL ?

Excellent point. I did not reaize that on the camera RAW files. NR was "off" in PPL.

Say please... Sure. These shots were taken in a hall/entry way during a cloudy day under ambient light. Lighting was not the best, but it certainly shows the useability of the higher ISO's for allowing fast shutter speeds to stop action under similar light.

I will try to take the same shots tonight under artificial light.

You know how Nikon has that ad in the magazines "No Digital SLR on the planet could have taken this shot" (You know the one with the motorcycles) I think the k20d could have taken that shot for about $4000 less.

Thanks for the shots, I didn't realize that 3200 ISO comes out that clean and even the 6400 is very usable on most normal condition IMHO.

Cheers,

Rene

Like some other tests I've seen, it looks like the highlights have VERY little noise, while the shadows seem to suffer a little. Pretty amazing though.

I think it's amazing that colour accuracy stays so consistant throughout the ISO range...the times they are a changin'

Since you asked nicely Here is what you asked for. Pictures were taken in bad tungsten light. Barely enough for me to read by. I had to put the camera on a tripod because the shutter speeds were so slow. Everything else was the same as the other daylight tests. I made sure to expose to the right.

Also just in case anyone were to ask, I added an "extreme" case. The last shot I turned off the lights in the hallway so it was so dark I couldn't see the cottage. That resulted in a 4 second exposure at ISO 6400 and f/4.

Same results: K20d has awesome ISO performance as far as I am concerned.

Very nice, pentaxpoke. Here's another set of K20D high ISO macro and close focus shots (ISO 800 to ISO 3200, everything should be labeled) --> K20D_high_iso - a set on Flickr
