I've been shooting with Pentax since I bought my ZX-L in 2003. I was 19. I am freshly 30 and still have many years of picture-taking left! (I hope...)

I feel the demographic trend we are seeing is a small subset of a more discerning clientelle that chooses to be a part of such a forum. They probably are brand-loyal (not brand snobs), may be driving their cars longer and possibly have Subarus . This is also a forum of individuals very interested in photography as an art and form of expression.

At the risk of being critiqued (politely, I hope), I will share this. In Cincinnati, I accompany my child to the parks, zoo, museum, acquarium (heck, why not, she's a lot of fun!). I see a lot of kit lenses on Canikons - it's what Costco, Sam's, Bestbuy, Target, Walmart, etc sell. It's also a lot of what is advertised. I think Pentax used to be more common, but now, is becoming more "niche" or "exclusive" - largely due to lack of visibility to the common man. No TV/magazine/newpaper ads will do it.... I'm not faulting them for their business plan.

I believe Pentax make excellent products that fit my use well - the enjoyment of photography.

"I'm 37, I'm not old!"
Sadly in my case, neither of those statements are true.

Wow, ~160 reactions already. And there is a incredible void in the under 20 to 30 range! Reading the reactions here we can say most of the older users started with Pentax at a very young age, so Pentax was once definitely very attractive to younger generations. Something changed.
Either that or PentaxForums does not have a young-person demographic.

You'd be surprised... The people I know who own one are kite surfers, divers and racecar mechanics. None of which can honestly be afforded by many teenagers.

I see them on lots off different places. With bouldering, swimming, next to tenniscourts. They are everywhere.

If you think otherwise, you might(?) be in for a surprise. Me and my K-3 recently ran into a larger gathering of para gliders. And (admittedly somwhat to my surprise) quite a few were my age+. And yes, some were using GoPro as far as I could see.

As Racer X 69 says: We refuse to grow up.

I think that are two forms of photography this days (and not only) The sharing type, and the expression type.

The sharing, (or family photo in the old age) is now the mainstream for smartphone users, and the compact camera users.

The expression type, include the DSLR users, and everything that is higher that compact.

In this sense, I think the results cannot be to far if this poll is made for Canon and Nikon DSLR users. It's not a problem of brand, IMHO, but one of mental development.

Among my younger friends (25-35) who have DSLRs, there are 2 Canon, 2 Nikon, and 1 Pentax. But most of the people I know in this age bracket don't have DSLRs-- they have no serious interest in photography, so they have point-and-clicks or, more commonly, just their phone camera.

You mean there are twentysomething Pentax users? This informal survey confirms my own sure-to-be-skewed-ideas that most Pentax users are old coots or soon-to-be old coots. Methinks most folks in their 20s haven't heard of the brand, and that many folks in their 30s believe Pentax went under years ago when grandpa died.

I think the 20-29 category will be much less because if you were like me (especially now) you were broke during that time frame. Much less ability to drop cash on cameras and lenses and all that.

Or like many young people, they do not necessarily purchase on value for money, they go for brand recognition almost entirely value for money is something that young people have to make tough decisions. When they are twenty something, long term decisions are just not as important as they should be.

With 153 responses so far, the distribution looks nowhere near as skewed to the upper age band as when it started. In fact, it's starting to look like the famous but much-abused "bell curve" distribution, which is pretty much what you'd expect with the adoption of a hobby that involves a significant financial commitment from disposable income.
