I became an official Pentax user at the ripe age of 17 with a purchase of a SF-1. And then stayed until 25( I dreamed of a FA* 85mm ) to leave for Nikon. And now I'm back shooting a K-01 at 42 and not ever leaving because the lenses match my Leicas.

O wow lots off responces. Well I started Pentax with K20D in januari 2009. Used Nikon in analogue time and started with a Nikon bridge digital in 2008, Coolpix P80, wich was the most wonderfull camera to start with, but I outgrowth it in 2 weeks.

Wow, ~160 reactions already. And there is a incredible void in the under 20 to 30 range! Reading the reactions here we can say most of the older users started with Pentax at a very young age, so Pentax was once definitely very attractive to younger generations. Something changed.

Among my younger friends (25-35) who have DSLRs, there are 2 Canon, 2 Nikon, and 1 Pentax. But most of the people I know in this age bracket don't have DSLRs-- they have no serious interest in photography, so they have point-and-clicks or, more commonly, just their phone camera.

Q users, film and Tak users don't count as Pentaxians? This grumpy old man(36) will refrain from voting, as requested, since I no longer have a Pentax DSLR.

The thing that pushed me away was how expensive the lenses were. The FA* 85mm was far too expensive for a starting photographer. I switched to Nikon and got the lenses I NEEDED for a cheaper price. I now get lenses I WANT with the limiteds. I met up with Ned on a trip to Southern California and he mentioned that the FA 31mm ltd is like my 35mm Summicron asph and I agree with him. For the days I don't pull out my M6, I grab my K-01 and limiteds. Even though the limiteds are more expensive than the Nikon equivalents ( though they are not equal ), I find I want to shoot them more and more. So, I have a pro kit with Nikon D800/D700s and a Gang of lenses and then my K-01 as my everyday camera with my limiteds. And this is not to forget my MX and Me Super with a smc takumar 1.4. Bottom line.... Even though I left, I was always a Pentaxian just waiting for me to make more money to afford the lenses I wanted!

Just barely made it into the 20-29 bracket.

I was gifted a Canon Rebel T3 that I learned on through 2012 and 1H2013, but once I got dissatisfied with that and did my own research, I sold it and switched to the Pentax K-30 on the grounds that nobody else could match what you got for the money (and I didn't want an EVF) and I didn't care about video.
AFAIK, none of my friends or relatives have any connection to the Pentax brand, and I can't help but wonder how unique that makes me among twentysomething Pentax users (it would make sense if a lot of them are tied into the brand because of parents etc.).

Still not selling the Canon 40/2.8 pancake though. Even if you can't manual focus it worth a damn, that thing takes awesome pictures.

You mean there are twentysomething Pentax users? This informal survey confirms my own sure-to-be-skewed-ideas that most Pentax users are old coots or soon-to-be old coots. Methinks most folks in their 20s haven't heard of the brand, and that many folks in their 30s believe Pentax went under years ago when grandpa died.

Even though I'm not yet in my 40s I still remember when I was a kid that Pentax was very popular. At the time I didn't know much about photography. I also recall using a Pentax camera for my 7th grade photography class....the youngest amongst us more than likely grew up without even that. I can't tell you how many times I have heard "Pentax? Are they new?"

You think that GoPro has the same demographics?
