Another happy customer

After a few more severely back-focussed shots with my FA 50 1.4 this morning, I finally got up the nerve to try out the GX10-K10D Debug Mode Control on my ver. 1.3 K10D. I had downloaded the program several weeks ago, but it would cause my XP SP2 computer to reboot when I clicked on "Connect to DSLR". I loaded it onto a Windows 7 (beta) laptop, but Debug wouldn't recognize that the camera was connected, even though I could browse the card. "Opencam" error message. So, one more computer in the house - also XP SP2 so that's not the issue - and the connection was made.

I switched on Debug Control. Success! After disconnecting and turning the camera back on, sure enough, there was "Debug mode" in the LCD. It doesn't stay on forever, as I had gathered from other posts it would. The screen does black out completely after the usual interval.

I made my adjustments in AF Area Test 0. I set the adjustment to +100 and did some test shots with Yvon Bourque's chart (pentaxdslrs.blogspot.com), and much better! Not perfect, so I went back in and adjusted to +120. The scale had reset to zero by then, but the previously stored setting of 100 was displayed just above the scale. So, you don't have to remember your starting point (another thing I was concerned about after reading other posts.) More test shots; too far. I have settled on +110.

Checked it out with my 18-55 kit lens, and all good there too. It also had a back-focus problem. I then reconnected to the computer and switched off debug mode.

I will carry on testing with my Vivitar Series 1 70-210 and my Tamron Adaptalls (all manual focus). If those are good, then I'll have enough confidence in Pentax and my K10D to invest in the DA 12-24.

Meanwhile, I'll try not to wonder too much about whether I should have made adjustments in AF Test Areas other than 0.

That's fine. Please see earlier post regarding the AF Test Areas.

My one question:

Is there any way to switch to normal menu/preview shots from the debug menu while in use? Or is it stuck in the debug menu until you reconnect via usb, reprogram, and reboot?

You need to turn-off debug mode with program for K10D/GX10 Ver 1.30 (it is the only way).
As for K100D Super - the only way to exit debug mode is like for K100D and *ists.

It seems to be most functional on a PC running XP. People have reported problems using Vista. Somehow I doubt that it will work on a MAC.

Hi,

What are the chances of this procedure working on a K200D, which I believe has the same processor as a K10. My K200 definitely front focuses.

If I try it can I damage the camera?

I tried your method to get into debug for my K10D (ver 1.3). Didn't work. What button are you calling "play"?

I'm pretty sure that doesn't work with firmware v1.3 which is why the debug program is required - this is only available with older firmware (v1.1?).

Don't have my K10D to hand, but it's on v1.3 and I'm 99% sure I've tried and failed with the above before now.

Yeah, it doesn't work on v1.3, I have my camera in hand and just tried. Could you down rade to v1.1 and fix the focus then re-upgrade back to v1.3, or would the changes go away?

Yes that would work. You could download the modified bin file here and follow the instructions. When you're done, you could just install version 1.3 back. The changes will not go away.

I'm still wondering where the PLAY button is that Ozman seems to have on his K10D.
