Yet another reason I love my Pentax!

Stumbled across this article advising caution when upgrading to latest Canon firmware and third party batteries no longer working!:

Discussion - Camera Firmware Update Causes Third Party Batteries to Fail

Needless to say I've always kept my K-x and K-30's firmwares current and NEVER had a problem like this!

Interesting reading for sure. I'm in the do the firmware updates camp. Had a number of very good things happen with updates on my Pentaxs. The Canon users I know seem to generally not be as aware of such updates. That can be taken a few ways one of which is that they seldom occur and are needed as often because Canon get's things right - mostly - or we Pentaxians are just more geeky than other brand users. Which is it? No idea actually.

OTOH, had some experience with Panasonic's Lumix cameras a GF-2 actually. Experienced very short battery life with that camera (and their OEM battery). Came to find out that Panasonic clearly designed their cameras to work with their batteries and third party ones were unlikely to work very well at all. So...would Canon do something like that too? Again, no idea.

With all the Pentax issues over the years, you decide to post this?

Didn't Nikon do this some time ago?
And yeah, considering how high the prices are of "genuine" batteries, its no wonder they want to limit that market and keep a monopoly. I hope Pentax never does this.

Just as there are 3rd party printer cartridges that are detected by the printer as "genuine" there will soon be third party batteries with "genuine" chips in them too.

Has canon even had feature extensions with firmware? My k100D got larger SD-card support and K-3 got focus peaking etc. While mainstream brands just get restrictions and some new lens configurations.
