The specs of the camera are more impressive than the ergonomics. We like the large optical viewfinder and backlit mode dial, though the latter is rough on your thumb. The four-way controller is poorly designed, and the grip is small and slippery. The LED lights on the grip are more style than substance, but at least you can turn them off.
Doesn't really do their name justice. I hope Pentax will retain the supurb ergonomics, for which they are known for, in their higher tier cameras. Lets hope their not letting the one thing which they are really very good at slip too.

It's not an entry level DSLR. Ricoh calls it a mid-level and priced it accordingly.
Where does Ricoh call it a mid-level camera?

On Ricoh's German site:

"PENTAX K-S1 die ideale Kamera für Spiegelreflex-Einsteiger"

which clearly means an entry-level camera.

Interestingly enough, on their global homepage, Ricoh calls it a "standard class DSLR":

RICOH IMAGING COMPANY, LTD. is pleased to announce the launch of the PENTAX K-S1 digital SLR camera. This standard-class model incorporates new elements that optimize digital taste, such as a progressive design and an innovative interface system, while providing outstanding imaging performance -- one that rivals even high-end models.

The PENTAX K-S1 is designed for users who have become familiar with taking photo through the use of their smartphones and tablet computers, but, because they are not totally satisfied with the image quality and features provided by those portable gadgets, have become interested in more serious photography. The K-S1 features a compact, progressive body design that overturns conventional concepts of digital SLR cameras, and an innovative Body Illumination interface system that facilitates intuitive camera operation. It also provides other outstanding features rivaling those of high-end models, including: the PENTAX-developed AA (anti-aliasing) filter simulator first installed on the PENTAX K-3 (launched in November 2013); an optical viewfinder with a glass pentaprism to provide approximately 100% field of view; an in-body shake reduction mechanism; and a top sensitivity of ISO 51200. These features combine to provide the exceptional digital imaging performance that will satisfy photographers of all levels -- from first-time SLR users to experienced photo enthusiasts.

So, the K-S1 is rather in (and defining) a class of its own......

Link.

So will this camera allow you to turn the AA filter off for sharper pictures? If so, this could be an interesting choice for those of us with a K5 who do not wish to pay the K3 price. And further more, how does this compare to the k5iis which is now competitively priced at $696 with extras?

I also like how we can choose the color of the lights.
I don't think you can. Green on the grip, and red or green on the shutter depending if you shoot video or stills.

Other things it has + a few it might not - from PENTAX K-S1 / RICOH IMAGING
  • multi-auto WB
  • AF expansion, AF hold
  • Prime-MII ?? though video specs are not amazingly different - HDMI port, no mic port
  • DCU5 software, not sure what improvements are in that version

not present or mentioned on ricoh site
  • shutter life or sound
  • AF correction for each/all lenses !!
  • newest SAFOX (EV to -1)
  • f/2.8 AF sensors

eh what?
one reviewer mentioned 102400 iso which implies sensor iso expansion? This is NOT on the Ricoh page, probably a misspeak.

It seems the cams went out without final firmware since I've seen no menu screens or heard any shutters fire...

I like this: Manual Flash Discharge (Full-1/128). Theoretically, I could use older lenses with manual flash compensation.

I think most review sites will think it's an entry level camera when it's not black and boxy. Hell, seems like most of the people do for some reason.

I love the unorthodox designs Pentax is trying out. I hope it catches on.
The K-30 design didn't catch on....... Shame really

It's also usable to trigger off camera flashes equipped with 'dumb' optical triggers. The k-3 was (afaik) the first pentax dslr with manual control of the pop-up. It took them far to long to finally include this simple feature but I think we can expect it on everything from now on.
