I think monochrome is messing with us -- anybody using the word "prigs" would know what "whinging" is.

FWIW, I originally typed "bitching" but changed it because I thought it might not get past a language filter, which was an unfounded concern I see.

Oh, I see. You meant whining then.

whine
(h)wīn/
verb

gerund or present participle: whining
  • give or make a long, high-pitched complaining cry or sound.
    • "the dog whined and scratched at the back door"
  • complain in a feeble or petulant way.
    • "the waitress whined about the increased work"
synonyms:complaint [noun], complain [verb], grouse, grumble, murmur;

Let me help with that

OK then.*

* Too many people here complain too much about things they haven't seen yet that don't really matter because they never would have bought the camera anyway. But not to worry. It won't sell in the USA or Europe, and maybe not even Asia now that we've thoroughly trashed it, so we won't have to complain about other people using them.

it is a fine camera, I like Pentax because they are different and accept k mount lenses from 70s etc without the need for adapters. I do agree that Pentax should always trust the designers who worked on models like k30, k3, k5, k7. Pentax ergonomics in most cases are pretty much perfect. But k s1 is a very interesting cam, I find back-lit buttons awesome, I just wish they went fully on the idea and put there a flip out screen like olympus ep7 and k s1 could really work well for social networks people who enjoy making selfies. In general, looks of the k s1 camera are very fine, really eye catching device. For the future, ricoh pentax should work on flip out swivel screen, at least something like oly epl 7 ( ep7?), built in wifi and maybe andoid os for this line ( but leave the current menu for other higher end offerings, pentax menu is almost perfect)? so the cam would definitely be for those, who wanna make a step up from phones to Dslrs for taking pictures. I am proud that pentax is not afraid of experimenting and being different, I kind of wish that other Pentax cameras that are coming would come with back-lit buttons. That seems like a useful feature.

It was these guys actually.
ziba tokyo

I don't think a US division, especially in Portland, would have designed the look that is the K-s1.

Nor would Ricoh have employed the services of a gaijin after the K-01...

Just wait for the K-S2! Could be even more exotic.

So far we've had Marc Newson - K-01, Ziba - K-S1. For their next camera Ricoh might get Frank Gehry to consult on the design.
Industrial designers? Architects? Think outside the square: Vivienne Westwood? Donatella Versace? Gordon Murray?

Just like all the whiners about the name "Ricoh" on the back of the K3, all this fuss about the K-S1 is much ado about nothing! Personally, I don't care for the look, but then, some don't care for the K30's design either. In all cases, it's what's inside that counts, and the K-S1's guts are impressive, the outside is merely a matter of taste. Seeing as it's aimed at newer / younger photo enthusiasts, it just may catch on! For all of those longing for a Pentax "full frame", think of this as a way to lure more users into the brand before making the investment in a full frame line.

Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong!

How about Gordon Ramsay? "Hell's Camera Design Kitchen". Contestants from every company and design house. The whinging here would pale in comparison the blue streak I imagine he could tear into that group with. I'd love to watch that show.

I think you nailed it, actually. At least I agree.

I was out shooting this afternoon and I was thinking about how happy I was, overall, with the K-5.

And then I was thinking about how I don't really look 'at' the camera as much as 'through' it. And as was pointed out earlier, I'm not the target market for the KS-1 - even though it'll produce image quality likely several steps ahead of the K-5.

So why was I so irked at the KS-1?

I guess because it's neither the Pentax FF Unicorn, nor the K-3 replacement, and my favourite camera company has squandered their resources not building what I'd like, when I'd like it. Just my opinion. Maybe Photokina will hold some surprise(s).

What's the next event after September?

Who cares? You're not going to get a K-3 replacement till late 2015 at the earliest, and there is no FF coming.

Then I'll be surprised. But I'm not wasting time waiting for one.
