Well, yes. I figured that's the reason Pentax had in mind. However, I prefer accuracy, then I can choose to do whatever exposure alteration, according to the circumstances. So with the K20D I would just leave exposure as is when in very bright and very contrasty conditions, especially with highlights to consider. The camera also has controls for both shadow detail and for extra highlight protection. I still view the K20D as offering very meaningful improvements over the K10D. A very well-designed and capable model- especially at that time, but even now admirable.

Totally agree with you. That's why I have been unable to sell mine. I also like the hand fit and feel and although I am used to the K3 after 6 years I still like the K20.

Plus on old low-resolution sensors like the K20 has, even so-so lenses create amazing pictures (DA 55-300 mm for example).

Yes it surely can! Although not quite up to the more current 24mp or even the 20mp of the K-S2 (all without an AA filters), I tend to think of low resolution being more like the 6mp models. The K20D's 14.7mp for all practical purposes is a 15mp design, in the same ball park as the still highly-regarded K-5 series, so it can deliver quite sharp images, even enough to show off extra-fine lenses like the DA* 50-135mm. Of course the K-5 series was a major step forward in DR and in low noise. But with its highlight and shadow detail controls, the K20D can still do a good job compensating when it comes to DR. I believe the K20D also was the first Pentax to offer AF fine-tuning for different lenses.

That was learning curve for me when I got the first DSLR. I shot a lot of chromes back in the day and it was the opposite situation. But I bracketed back then and I still bracket even with digital, and it is easier and cheaper to bracket with digital

When I say the K20 has a "low-resolution" sensor, it's because I compare it to my other cameras : K3 (24 Mpx), K1 (36 Mpx) and 645Z (50 Mpx). But almost any camera can produce a nice image.

Great in daylight.

Serious shadows can cause serious colour artifacting problems.

But not always....

It's definitely not the low light performer the K-5 was.

Big paint job in sight ! Pentax K20 + DA 55-300 mm HD @ 1/125 sec and f/11.

Old wooden church in a small Quebec village. The building is in need of a big paint job before deterioration gets too severe.
