Ran the shutter count program on my K-x today (see below) and was wondering if this is considered a low or average shutter count. (I bought the camera used in December, 2011 with a shutter count of 9,355.)

9,000 exposures in 3 years for a total of 18,706 in 4.5 years?

I have put 7000 exposures on my K-3 since April.

If I were buying I would not consider it to be, no. It would be acceptable, for a used camera advertised as having some mileage on it but not as one considered to be low. Low to me definitely means under 10K to me, the lower the # the better. Anything more than 30-50K and I hesitate to buy usually unless the price tag is really, really low. Most cameras have 100K listed as their shutter life. They can go more or sometimes less but anything over 10K to me is not that low. 18K is better than 50K, sure, but I'd rather see far less. None of my used cameras have had more than 12K and most have had considerably less use actually when I got them. 10K-12 is about my limit. I don't like to see more on there when I get one. I really don't. When it comes to bodies I usually buy them used but in "like new" condition. I'm kind of picky about that and to me "like new" that means a very low shutter count.

I've bought a 5k-something actuation K100D Super and a 240 (yes) actuations K-01, so... average, I'll say, also based on this site:

It's broken in after all those years if you ask me. How many shots do you shoot per year?

"Shutter specification" - "Shutter count" / "your predicted average per year" = "Years of service until reaching the specified minimum shutter life"

I dare to say that a huge majority of the digital cameras dies of age, sensor failures and unexpected design weaknesses than from shutter life. The shutters are relatively well designed for wear and tear.

Yes or astro with stacking. But if you use the formula I wrote and it says one year or so you are the exception to the rule.

My K-7 died this year of shutter failure, and the entire shutter assembly had to be replaced for around $175 by Eric. It had approximately 30,000 actuations.

At only 30.000 actuations it not just wear and tear, it's external conditions and/or unexpected mechanical failure other than the one counted for. That kind of failure can happen the first shot or the 200.000nd shot. Wear and tear that the shutter is specified for is something different.

I was talking to a camera repair guy, and he was saying that before a shutter reaches its mean lifetime, it loses its top end performance ... ie you can dial in 1/6000s or whatever but you won't be getting near it.

I was almost buying an used K-5 with 200 000 actuation's (timelapse camera) and messaged the Swedish service center about it it and they replied that they seen more used K-5's but no K-5 needing a shutter replacement due to wear due to use like that. Maybe they've seen one after that but I trust them. I got an even better deal for a silver limited one so I jumped it anyway.
