Pentax lens test

"Chasseur d'Images" (a French photo mag) has made a test of the latest Pentax optics, including the 17-70, and concluded that the optical quality of those optics don't have to bow in front of Nikon or Canon. When it comes to prime lenses, those camera makers should actually bow in front of some Pentax lenses.:ugh:

They have tested the DA17-70? That is interesting.

If the DA17-70 is as good as the DA16-45, then I will be purchasing the the DA17-70 as a good travel lens. :-)

As for Chasseur d'Images comment on Pentax prime lenses, and Pentax lenses as a whole, I couldn't agree more.

I'm with Lance on this, in fact I'm looking to partner this lens with the DA*60-250 when it finally arrives (in the meantime I will use the DA 55-300).

Hopefully, one year, Pentax will make a really superb DA* 15-60 f4.0 constant with a 67mm filter size, to partner perfectly with the 60-250, that would be the perfect 2 lens zoom kit for me.

Some may hanker for f2.8, or even wider down to 14mm, but I suspect that would push the envelope too much. It's the wide end and faster glass that seems to cause all the issues, aside from quality control.

Chasseur d'Images doesn't post current issues of their mag on the web. As soon as I can find a copy, I'll scan it and post it for those who can read french. As an afterthought, I might be desperate, I'm married to an english canadian (think about all the heated arguments).

In our house, heated arguments can be in any combination of English, Francais, Franglais and/or Frenglish. Along with some things that we won't mention.

Hey, Canada Rockies,
try to add Hungarian to the mix. My wife is of Hungarian origin and when her family is over, it's rather interesting, to say the least. Fortunately, since her family is closer to your part of Canada than mine (Quesnel, B-C), it gives me plenty of time to recover.

Last year, I spent a month in La Belle Province. Took about 15 rolls of film, put 8,500 km on the trailer, and had a ball. In French, or at least what passes for French in Quebec. The pictures turned out superbly. MZ-S and the rest of the rig. Mostly with the 24-90 for people shots and general all round, longer for others, rarely. I didn't have wider, but could have used it. That's why I added the 12-24 to my list.
