bad banding with k20d

What is causing such a consistent pattern on a faulty SD card?
I have seen this mentioned several times, but this visual aid, it's puzzling, glad neither of my 2 cards did this to me

Early in my life I was in Radio Technician/ Tech Elec field. Amazing what a bit of signal noise will create. One bad contact can create a small decrease in conductivity. That will change current flow and so it goes on. It could be some form of signal feedback.

Glad it was something simple.

A quick method for fault finding is to replace components one at a time, SD card, lens, battery, grip etc. When you cannot fix the problem with the replacement of other components then it comes back to the Camera Body and then it is outside your control and has to go back for repair.

ok, some new info on this.
It doesnt seem to be the SD card after all. But the D-range!!
I did some more tests, and it seems to affect a certain range of the brighter parts of he image. I can even tell it from the histograms in the camera when the banding has occured. Some times its nearly visible in the image but very clear in the histogram. It shows itself as sharp cuts in the bright part of the histogram.
Can you check this out with your k20d:s??

I dont have the problem in DRANGE which I use a lot. I think you have a faulty chip somewhere in the image pipeline. If you can take the camera dn photos back to your retailer and demand a replacement. If this is impractical call them, tell them what the trouble is (they can link to these photos) and see if they will be reasonable. Last resort, send it to Pentax under warranty and they should replace the circuit board for you.

I have never seen banding in images, but know what you mean on the histogram.
It reminds me of those histograms that indicate it was a software pushed ISO rather than a real sensor ISO, don't recall what thread they were on.

Can i remind you that your original shots had banding all over, no matter if white shirt or dark collar? Maybe you are a little analyze happy/worried right now? Dont forget that any digital camera will produce some sort of banding pattern if you push a shot too much.

Or did you mean by turning drange on and off you can turn the initial problem on and off (don't think you meant that with the comment about highlights only)

To accuse the SD card is common. However, everybody knowing the JPG algorithm (which is a compressive format) knows that periodic artifacts are impossible except for a bit error in the JPG coefficients stored in the JPG file header.

Your camera is defective. Get it replaced.

yes, I will it replaced. Damn!! I hate to buy stuff that doesn´t work. I hope hey will give me new one, I don´t want a repaired camera.

Hello to everybody here!

i had the same Problem with my 2 days old K20D. I shot 150 Pics, three of them had those stripes. All the Pics were taken with "ISO-200", "DRANGE ON", "AV-MODE" and JPEG Quality at ****.

Well, I sent the Cam back to my dealer, he promissed me a new one.
I think the new Cam will arrive the next 2 or 3 days - i hope
