Magnesium Alloy Body Cracked...

Is there anyway the metal body of my K5ii can be fixed? Is there any point in sending it to CRIS if the camera body is broken?

Must have been a hard hit = possible severe internal trauma to rest of the camera. Most like a total loss.

Clean it down to the metal and fill the crack with epoxy. JB Weld is very good.

A photo of the crack would be good. JB Weld would keep the body sturdy, but forget the weather sealing.

Those are my thoughts as well, though taking care to keep the goo in the crack and out of the camera.

A crack is usually the result of metal fatigue; see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatigue_(material)
Maybe the result of using heavy lenses, and carrying the camera with this heavy lens attached ?
The crack will grow until the part is broken in two.
A way to stop crack propagation is to drill holl each side of the crack.

Humm...did you hit it with a hammer?confused it with a ball? got used by Hulk to learn photography?

Seriousely, you need to explain or/and show a picture of the damage if you want useful help.

If it still works and everything lines up okay, glue it. You already killed it. Any use you get out of it now is a bonus round.
I would love to hear the story of how you broke the magnesium body. With pictures, of course....

I really want to see a pic of this cracked body!

And, I'm hoping the story of how it happened involved using the camera as a self defense weapon, or emergency demolition tool.

The other way a crack could appear relates to the technology of manufacture. The body is die cast and the crack could be the result of improper metal flow through the moulds and the front being just too cool to bond properly when metal fronts from different injection points meet. This is a common problem in regular aluminium diecast parts which are usually filtered by foundry QC - when they bounce on an anvil they do not ring right! I also know this matter was an extreme issue in the housing for the Mac Air computer which had a large piece that was unusually thin - took a long time to get the mould right. If this is the mechanism the crack is unlikely to get worse, but the camera must have received a blow for it to open up if it was not noticeable at time of manufacture.

The lens mount is attached directly to the camera chassis as are the pieces of the body shell.

We all have a morbid desire to see photos of the damage. This is a unique opportunity!

(...sorry, could not resist, though photos would be VERY cool...)

If this is a "pics or it didn't happen" thread then I'll have some up in the next couple hours. Hopefully nobody is disappointed.

Sorry to read that your K-5 II is cracked.
