For some reason many still think that full frame is to be announced, the fall will be hard hitting. Especially when a K-3 successor is announced. I think it was 2 years from K-5 to K-5II/IIs then one year to the K-3, it is possible that the K-3 successor could be announced next year for November 2015 release. I still think Ricoh are undecided on a full frame release, for me, development of FF does not = it is coming.
Then why lowering the prices of the K-3 so much? It's still a fantastic camera and a bargain for the price.
It would only be justified if they were trying to dump stock, I believe?

Yes I'm not sure why the lower price, maybe to move stock, hey if full frame comes I'm all for it, but I wait for official announcement, can only go by Ricoh interview some months back, they were non-committal, however I do think they will release a new crop model.

K5 and K5ii did the same as the end of life approached. the machining etc is covered now it's just maximise return

also no reason the k3 can't drop down to a spot above the KS1 but below the next latest greatest K apsc unit - just like the K5iis did.
As for FF not coming next year they have been quoted as saying 2015
of course it means nothing

A new crop model in what price range? I find it hard to believe they will try to top the K3, and below K3 I think everything is covered?

I don't have an answer for price range, but improvements yes, many could have said ahh the K-5 is all I need then the K-5II comes out, beauty. Always room for improvement.

How is that the only active current model i can see around in a year is the KS1 K5ii is definitely on the run out, so is the K50 (with some awesome deals) that leave the K3 (which is either running out or dropping a level to replace the k5ii in the line - ht KS1 really replaces the 50. missing is either a K500 replacement (doubt that will happen) maybe the K50 will hold on as the K500 replacement for a while . but definitely there is room for another top end apsc model that crushes the canikon equivalents (which have caught up and surpassed the K3 to some degree or another)
And FF has been under development so long I think the main holdback havs been the right sensor for the right price. the sensors in the Sony 7 and Nikon 750 and Df are all the right sensor for the right price I think (d600 and 6d levcel would be a really dumb entry to the market IMO - Build a pretty full blown flagship and hit at the middle market price (exactly where Pentax has been doing well all along)
they will never take down Canikon but they can get a more solid market hold so they don't become the casualty of the changing market ( Fuji beat them to what they should have done with mirrorless though I think - the mania in the lead up to the K-01 had everyone clamouring for an LX-like Mirror-less with a huge EVF - try an X-T1 that's what it is - If Ricoh had bought the company 2 years earlier that may have been what we saw, they inherited the K-01 and Q

Remember that:
  • K10D was announced on September 13th, 2006
  • K20D was announced on January 23rd, 2008, 16 months after K10D
  • K-7 was announced on May 20th, 2009, 16 months after K20D
  • K-5 was announced on September 20th, 2010, 16 months after K-7
(then Ricoh bought Pentax Imaging from Hoya; the successor to K-5 was delayed for further improvements and K-5 II/IIs was announced on September 10th, 2012 as stop gap)
  • K-3 was announced on October 7th, 2013
  • CP+ 2015 takes place from February 12th to February 15th, 2015, 16 months after K-3's announcement.

So ?

You need to take a break max! You have to slow down! You're losing it. You have to take a breath! Listen to yourself! You're connecting a computer bug I had, with a computer bug you might have had, and some religious hogwash. You want to find the number 216 in the world? You will be able to find it everywhere. 216 steps from a mere street corner to your front door. 216 seconds you spend riding on the elevator. When your mind becomes obsessed with anything, you will filter everything else out, and find that thing everywhere!

So should I hold off buying the K-3 now and wait for a K-3ii with built in wifi?

That's what I'm doing, hoping for articulating screen and improved video. Also if they can up the mp without sacrificing burst speed that would be nice

I don't see the K-3 needing to be replaced at this time. Its just one year old and still as good or better than any other APS-C DSLR on the market. Pentax needs to be working on glass. Faster SDM or DC motors. The IQ of the K-3 is better than the new Canon 7DII. The build quality is better than anything by Sony or Nikon short of the D4.

Sony has new sensors coming out. They might be a big enough step forward to justify an upgrade.... might.

Is an articulating screen that more useful than a tilting screen?
Most camera manufacturers seem to settle for a tilting screen, and I would that to be much less complicated to provide.

A K-3 II, like the K-5 IIs, would need some noticeable hardware and feature improvements over it's predecessor to justify the 'II'. I'm not sure exactly what they could add - maybe enhanced AF hardware? a newer PRIME chip? A flippy screen?

And any K-2 or K-4 (or whatever) upgrade would need to feature some very big changes and improvements indeed. Akin to the jump we saw from the K-5II to K-3. I just can't see what those changes could be within APS-C.

But I suppose manufacturers don't always need much excuse to create a new model - eg the Nikon D610 is practically identical to the D600, ditto the D810 vs D800. Freshens things up, helps sales.

I see a new high-end APSC (aka K3ii or whatever the next name is) being around the $1300 price range and the new FF being around priced around $1800 to 2k.
