Originally posted by joefru I'm surprised to see so many left-eyers. I thought the right eye was pretty universal.
I on the other hand was surprised to see this poll. I think I've been shooting with my left eye since I got my first SLR in the 1970s some time. I guess I'm vaguely aware that other photographers use their right eye, but really, I've never given it a moment's thought personally.
I'd like to know how people box. Well, I have never boxed, but when I hold my fists up as if I were going to shadow box, my left fist is out front, my right fist is in between my left fist and my chest, and my head is turned a bit to the right. It just feels natural. It's as if I'm trying to protect my right eye. Odd, actually, since my right eye is worse than my left one.
If I drop the boxing idea and just stand up and look straight at something, and if I then consider turning my head one way or the other, as if I were having my own photo taken and I wanted to show the best side of my face, I naturally want to turn to the right and show the left side of my face. Turning to the left
feels funny.
One last point. The poll asks what we do with our left eyes, and obviously, I answered that that's the eye I shoot with. So let me ask and give my own answer the obvious follow-up: If you shoot with your left eye, what do you do with your RIGHT eye?
My answer is, I do not feel the need to close my right eye while shooting. My brain simply filters out the input from that eye while my left eye is up against the camera's viewfinder. On the other hand, if I try shooing (contra naturam) with my right eye, I absolutely feel the need to close my left eye.

P.S. I'm right-handed. I wonder if that matters.
