I'm a lefty too and suprised by the number of ppl shooting with there left eye. Sometimes i will shoot both eyes open eg moving cars and the like but otherwise the right 1 is just shut.

How come noone builds a camera for leftys so u dont get a nose smudge on hot days down the bottom right of the LCD?

I'm another one who keeps the left eye open for action, closed for scenics, flowers, etc.

although the eye patch sounds like fun!

I am left eye dominant. I sight firearms and cameras with my left eye - always have. When I hunted I had to find guns made for lefties because it just felt more natural. Weird thing - I am right handed.

I am an oddity, I guess.

I also am Left eye dominate, but when shooting I do close the right eye, and depending on the light depends on how tight I close it.

I squeeze mine so tight I could crack a walnut with my brow. It's a bad habit, and probably the reason my vision is getting worse in that eye. Thankfully, my right eye is tack sharp.
My left eye always gets blurry when I shoot since I squint that eye so much when shooting.

I'm an eye-leftie as well. I actually have a lefty camera - the Bessa 66 - with which I tend to perform a comical sequence of squishing my nose into the back, not finding a hole to peer into, becoming confused, taking the camera away from my face to look at it, going AHA! and lifting it back now in the correct position, to the left of my face.

Not just hot days, but everyday for me. My LCD cloth is my very best of friends when I am shooting...

Right-handed, but left-eye dominant. Which means I use my left eye for photography, shoot pool left handed and shoot a bow left handed. My right eye is shut, but not too tight.

I like to shoot sports. Leaving my non-viewfinder eye open allows me to protect myself from a stray ball, out of control athlete, etc. I also switch from my right eye to my left eye depending on where the action is.

It also helps to be able to see if the action is not where you expected it to be, allowing for a quick re-position, possibly saving a missed shot.

I'm surprised to see so many left-eyers. I thought the right eye was pretty universal.

I'm guessing it's the title of the thread - "Left Eye" It may be attracting the left eye dominant population. I'm quite sure right eye dominance is more common overall.

That's probably true, but I thought even the left-eyers were right-eye shooters. I don't think I've ever seen someone in public shooting with their left eye. That would mean their entire face was covered by the camera. (Yes, I know our cameras are pretty big and do a good bit of face-covering, even for right-eyers.)

I'm right-handed, left-eye dominant too but a mixed bag on sighting/viewing.

Cameras & pistols: left eye
Rifles and monocular devices: right eye
When both eyes are in use though the left eye is where the primary focusing happens.

As to what the 'other eye' is doing at the time...
When shooting (cameras or firearms) it is open. When viewing (micro/tele scopes) it is closed but not squeezed.
