Pentax K20D vs Kx

Which camera has the upper hand,K20D or Kx in terms of performance? Which would be better for portrait photography?

Hi,

both are somewhat older models. However, in terms of performances, features, controls, etc, the K20D wins hands-down. It is a larger camera, which is one of the only points it loses versus the K-x. It is weather sealed, with more external controls, a larger and brighter viewfinder, a top LCD, more resolution, a faster burst mode. It shows the focus point in the viewfinder, which is important too.

The L-x has a basic video mode, a few functions like in-camera HDR, a slightly faster max shutter speed, and that's about it.

I have the K20D and K-r (same sensor as K-x but upgraded AF and jpeg engine, among other things).

I consider the K-r and the K20D a tie for portraits - K20D wins in terms of color reproduction, especially skin tones, but also just colors in general. Also, K20D has a much better viewfinder and tons more controls on the body. K-r wins in the areas of dynamic range (obviously) and AF. The AF on the K-r is just more accurate than on K20D. As bdery pointed out, the K-x (and K-r) is quite smaller and that does make a difference... However, since the K-x, I think, has the same AF system as the K20D, instead of the one in the K-r, I think the K20D actually wins in a direct comparison. So - Unless you really need that extra dynamic range, I would just go with the K20D.

Another thing in the K20Ds favor is that it can take a battery grip. The extra controls might be useful when shooting in portrait orientation.

I owned the K20D and K-x simultaneously for a few years. The K20D was my main body, the K-x was backup. I eventually sold the K-x and still have the K20D. The K-x has higher dynamic range and about 2/3 stop better high ISO performance, but regardless, images from the K20D look better and the controls are vastly superior. Here's a test with crops that I did to try and figure out why I preferred K20 colours and detail:
