Camera Bugs

I always wondered how the camera manufacturing industry handle Bugs in the equipment they make. Do they stop all manufacturing and put a in fix, or do they keep manufacturing the same product with a Bug until a new model comes out ? Some things like software glitches can be handled by Upgrades, but I'm talking about major manufacturing glitches such as a lens back focusing, or a camera malfunctioning.

Any service recall you remember?

Good question. I wondered was there any service recall for some model of a camera? I can't remember such an action anyway. To produce a camera companies have to have very tight tolerances in production process. I think manufacturers deals with all mechanical bugs in prototypes. Maybe its because of a bug we have to wait so long for FF Pentax SLR?

Major manufacturing defects (like Pentax sensor stains or Nikon's dusty shutter) are fairly uncommon, but when they happen, the manufacturer will generally fix the issue for affected customers free of charge.

Most Japanese camera manufacturers follow some form of continuous quality assurance (CQA) driven by quantitative measures as well as reports from the field. The history of this approach may be traced to the efforts of Deming during reconstruction after WWII. Google is our friend.

As for "stopping the line" if an issue is identified in the field (e.g. Nikon's D600 dust/oil issues), this would not happen until the fault was characterized, isolated, and prevalence determined. A cost analysis would then be done and an appropriate action taken based on that. For Nikon, this resulted in apparent continued production of at least some cameras with the fault and worldwide outrage as a result.

The de facto camera industry standard for serious fault is about 3-4% of cameras sold with Nikon occupying the outlier position at about 6%.*
