Pentax K-500 discontinued

I was wondering why K-500 is discontinued as it was released at the sametime as K-50, I own a K-500 :-)

Poor sales is the bottom line reason. With K-50s, K-5iis's, and K-3s selling for rock bottom prices the K-500 had nowhere to go.

I believe the K-S1 has taken its place.

The K-50 is now selling for less than the K-500 ever was Makes sense that they discontinued the K-500 before that ended up happening.

Why the K3?

Based on new products trailed at the Consumer Electronics Show by Pentax / Ricoh a new camera, which looks like a replacement for the K50, might be a better bet, unless you feel you have totally out grown the K500. Hopfully we have a fuller specification of it before the end of February. My guess will be it will have everything the KS1 has plus better handling (for ex K500 / K5 users anyway), weather resistance plus a few extras that will bring it it to the experienced amateur class.

No doubts about it, the K3 is a really great camera and is currently at a good price. However it has a much more challenging size of sensor and a professional ruggedness (with the weight that goes with it it). Do you really need those?

The k-500 was meant to be a short term fix to have a DSLR at the entry level price point. IT was never intended for a long production run.

+1. It was meant to compete with Canon's low end offering during the 2013 Christmas/Holiday season. No extra production runs were planned.

Hi @LoneWolf,

Thank you for the information, I had actually forgotten about the event that a new Camera is gonna be released soon replacing K50 series and articulated LCD and new Sensor is sure welcome. I shall wait for this model instead of spending big on K-3. Thanks a lot, You saved me some money :-)

Cheers!
