number of recordable images

something that i am wondering about...
with an empty memory card, my camera counter shows theres 817 recordable images left, but in reality theres room for up to 3 times more of them. of course the file size of images varies, but there still seems to be alot more room than just 817 even with larger files.
is anyone else getting this?
the card im using is SDHC Transcend 4GB class 6

The number of recordable images is a best guess based on the largest possible file size, which with jpeg can be pretty big with a very detailed subject.

A 4 gb card has about 3.8gb of storage. If the camera is estimating around 4.5~5mb per file, which is not an unreasonable size, then somewhere in the vicinity of 800 files is where the estimation will be.
They have to estimate file sizes on the large side because if the camera shot fewer files than the initial estimate, people would scream like hell about it.
