I have no idea why people would like that. The backgrounds too detailed/messy IMO. Looks ok with car pics occasionly.

Dave, what is the approx. light value one would have to shoot at (w/o flash)?

I'm wondering as well that current technology doesn't permit to shoot flashless. A 77mm f/1.8 (or a 85mm f/1.4 like the Zeiss Planar ZK) should deliver enough light even for 1/250s I guess. DoF is another story, of course...

Why don't you use a laser pointer or a small flashlight with a red filter? You could attach it to the camera with velcro and aim it away from the eyes. This should allow the camera to focus in low or no light
