Just got my 1st Pentax DSLR (K-5)

Soooo....Just bought a K-5 and wanted to know a couple of things to get me started. I have 2 lenses here, an 18-55 Samsung from a GX1L and a 28-80 Pentax. I'm presuming they will both work OK on this body? Are they any good? If not, and judging by the amout I paid, they aren't up to much, which lens would you suggest for a gig photographer.

I need to keep the spend pretty low, and I'd prefer AF if poss. I have a shedload of MF lenses, some of them really quite good, but AF is really useful in the hustle and bustle of a club. Has anyone used a K5 for gig photography?

I got a 12 month warranty with the camera so I have no worries about reliability, but how robust is the weather shielding? Light shower or downpour safe?

Anyway, I hope to keep this one as a backup to my A7, so I'll be around, annoying you all for a while hopefully.

Welcome! I have a K-5 as well. The weather sealing is downpour grade. But you need an equally sealed lens or it's all for naught. The DA* 50-135 f2.8 might be the thing for you as it is both fast, and sealed and a good focal length for gigs.

They will both work, but I'd recommend either getting a better zoom, or picking up a prime. Good cheap primes include the DA 35mm F2.4 and DA 50mm F1.8. A nice zoom would be the Sigma 17-70mm.

Congrats and welcome to the Forum !
If you want to try a good inexpensive AF lens grab a Pentax "F" 35-70mm before they are all gone. They used to be all over Ebay for about $30 but the Pentax FF announcement has them all but dried up and prices raising rapidly. I just grabbed a second one 2 hrs ago for $29 on Ebay .Its noisy , fugly , but does the job. Now for a concert lens it is quite slow but for the price you might give it a try if you can find one.

Great advice, thanks, I just snapped up a F 35-70mm for 25......it looks great from what I can garner from the net. I'm really looking forward to having a play with this camera. I always wanted a Nikon D7100, so, from what I have read so far, this is as good, if not better for a third of the price. It won't be as good as my A7 no doubt, but for the money I just paid, it will be a great 2nd. I'm gonna try a few of my 135mm f2.8's at gigs with this I think. I'll post the results here.

The K5 is a real workhorse. If you want weathersealing, you will need a WR lens. The current 18-55 isn't bad, but the 18-135 is better, and you can find both used.

I've been caught in downpours with the 18-135 on the camera. I mean real early summer 15 minute upper midwest cloudbursts. If we're lucky when walking the dogs we can duck under a big tree or on someone's porch but if not near a house, it's just soaking time. Actually, we've met a couple nice neighbors this way, by hunkering down on their porches.

If there's enough light, using manual lenses isn't bad on the K5. Remember there's a Catch-in-Focus feature as well.

I'd look for a couple of the pancakes, they're great. You can get a DA40XS really inexpensively and from what I've read it's really good. I have a DA21mm which gives really good contrast and colors.

Hello !

The best is to play a bit with your 18-55 to understand it. This lense is ok but not great.

Sharpness is a part what make a great lense where you might fault the 18-55 on some landscape in particular on borders. But at normal viewing size, that should not be too bad.

The framing you can get 18-55 is very usefull but many time you'll want wider/narrower field of view. You could think of adding a cheap telezoom (like a 55-300 or 70-300)

Larger apperture help keeping noise low. Sigma and tamron produce innexpensive great quality f/2.8 zoom (17-50 f/2.8 for example). This would help keep the noise low and get more bokeh.

There also the rendering, colors, contrast/micro contrast, flare resistance that in some circonstances can make a image that would be great but a bit flat, uninterresting into something vibrant looking in 3D, almost lifelike. This is mostly see in good primes and a few zooms. You can look for a few innexpensive (and AF ones) like the DA35 f/2.4 or DA50 f/1.8.

If I could only have one of my lens for club use, I'd take my Sigma 30mm 1.4, as to keep the iso down. But if I had to use a zoom, I'd go with a Pentax 12-24mm F4.This would be a fantastic lens for close quarter club shots.
