Looking to purchase some new sSD cards for my Pentax K10D with the latest software updates..What capacity and class of card can be used? Thanks Robert

Camera specs say SD or SDHC but not SDXC or UHS. That might have changed with a firmware update but you would be safe with SDHC. I would suggest getting only class-10 cards, not sure if the k10d can use that speed but the difference in cost is small and you are future proofed if you get a different body later. Also anything less than class-10 will most likely be a cheap budget card with questionable reliability.

So SDHC class-10. I prefer SanDisk and have never had an issue though other name brands are also good. Stay away from Sony they have a poor track record on Pentax cameras.

What jatrax said. Samsung cards seem to be good as well. And whatever you buy, make sure you buy from a reputable dealer, there are lots of fake cards out there.

I'm using Integral cards (Ultima PRO X, 32GB, 95 MB/s read 60 MB/s write). Cheaper compared to SanDisk, but so far working like a charm.

I hear the advertised Read/Write speeds ex: 95/mbs are generally inflated. It may refer to lab test results under ideal conditions with certain file sizes. I'm not sure if it shows in real life usage with JPEG/RAW. I don't have personal testing, but I've read it from several sources.

Of course the faster the better. Especially when using continuous shooting. Reputable brands such as SanDisk, Lexar, etc. do add the reliability side of things.

Sandisk are generally honest (you'll get 88mb/s from their 95mb/s cards - they list read/write speeds accurately on their website). Other makes may claim 95mb/s, but only deliver 40mb/s write speed.

I agree with most of what the other posters have said. Go with Class 10 SD cards. Most would agree that the write speed is of high importance with higher mega pixel equipment, both RAW stills and video require high write speeds. My K-5 fills up the buffer pretty fast in burst mode and it takes a while for it to write the data off, once it's full. The read speeds on a class 10 card won't be realized no matter what you read it through if a USB 2.0 port is the interface. USB 2.0 "theoretically" tops out at around 60 MBps. I have had heavily used cards that would only store relatively few pics, then the camera would report it as full. A format in camera would solve the problem, apparently "deleting" the images was not successful. Everyone else probably thought of this long ago, but if one person hasn't, here's a tip. Open a text editor and enter your contact information, large font size. Take a jpeg of the image (snipping tool or print screen the easiest route) and save your info as a txt file. Store both in a handy location and any time you format a memory card, put both i.e. OwnerInfo.txt OwnerInfo.jpg on the root of your card. If the card or your camera with the card in it is found by an honest person, your chances of getting either/both back increase dramatically.

I'm trying out micro-sd cards, after experiencing three recent mechanical failures with regular sized-cards. One of my Kingston and two of my Sandisk cards fractured near the write-protect switch, rendering on of the cards unreadable. Seemingly with a micro card, even the the adapter fractures, the card should remain intact and readable. Pentax officially disapproves of micro cards, but I haven't experienced any problems so far.

I didn't bother with the warranty on the 8gb Kingston card, but Sandisk replaced the 16 and 32gb cards promptly under warranty, with no hassles.

If there's a price difference, a name-brand class 6 will write just as fast onto the K10D as any class 10. Even on my later K20D, the difference between those two classes were minimal. Any model later, and the speed difference will be significant. If you plan to move to a newer dSLR with the card, go up to a higher class.

That is an SDXC card which may not work on the K10D. Unless SDXC was added in a later firmware update the camera only supports SDHC.

I didnt even notice that. Was reading this thread about Samsung cards and how someone liked them and minutes later it appeared up on slick deals. Never even thought to double check it was SDHC. Good catch, sorry about that

I have two K10D's, one is firmware 1.30, the other 1.31. Each worked fine with a Sandisk 16G class 10, and a Lexar 32G class 10. Kind of silly to have the capacity to shoot 1800 RAW images on one card, though.
