I have an acquaintance who owns a Pentax k100d camera with a 18~55mm pentax (kit lens). She has informed me that the camera has to be on Manual Focus for certain f/stops in order for her to take pictures. The camera does have Auto Focus capabilities. I indicated to her that this issue does not seem kosher. The unit has just over 7,000 shutter actuations, so it could not be an issue of age or abuse. I have seen the item, and it appears to be in beautiful condition. She has taken some truly wonderful photos with it. Please help and thank you very much for reading.

Sounds like user error- she could be confusing manual focus with manual exposure. Auto exposure modes may limit certain settings depending on available light.
