Pentax *istD what is the correct memory card?

Well, I finally got a Pentax *istD (as I said I'd eventually do a few months ago). So, I'm trying to get started and just formatting the memory card, I keep getting "Memory Card Error" messages.
I did not insert nor remove the card while the camera was "ON" and I do have the card unlocked. From what I could understand from the manual, it says the memory card might not be the correct one for the camera and it suggested browsing the Pentax website. Well I learned Pentax merged with Hoya but I didn't learn anything about the proper memory card.
So, could someone please tell me how to correct this?
Thank you.

Could just be a bad card. Do you have access to another CF memory card.

What kind of CF card do you have?

A generally good idea is to stick with well-known brand such as SanDisk or Lexar; but it isn't iron-clad.
Try swapping CF cards with another brand and see if you get the same error. Also try a smaller CF card (capacity-wise).

Best of luck to you.

Okay, I suppose I should have been a little more specific.

I'm using a SanDisk 4 GB SDHC Card.

So since the *ist D is a CF camera, I'm guessing you're trying to use an SD to CF adapter? Maybe the SD to CF adapter doesn't support SDHC cards?

My advice: use a real CF card.

istD firmware does not support the SDHC 4 gb the camera was discontinued before this type of card came out. So you need just a scandisk 2 or 4 gig CF card with out the SDCH.

Thanks everyone. This sure is a friendly helpful forum.
So, I'll see if I can find a CF card.
Thanks again.

Memory Card

If I am not mistaken the largest memory that the *ist DS will accept is 8GB which is what I am using. Anything above that may not function.

A quick question! I inserted an 8 GB SDHC card in my *ist DS and got a memory card error. I later tried a 2GB card (smallest available at the shop!) and the message did not reappear. How do you manage to get an 8 GB card accepted?

First of all, I found out that the *ist DS should be able to accept up to 32GB SD or SDHC card as long as you have the latest firmware upgrade of 2.02. If you do not have this firmware level your camera won't accept higher than an 2GB SD card. Version 2.02 allows the usage of both an SDHC card and up to 32GB.

Firmware Check

gerryferret...quick easy check of your firmware level. Hold the menu button down when you turn on the power and your firmware level will display in the window.
