lens for pentax K100D Sigma 50mm 2.8 ex macro

I've heard some very good things about this Sigma 50mm 2.8 ex macro lens.
Does anybody have one and can comment on how they like it.
It sounds like a good macro lens as well as a good walk around lens. The price is great, too. Freddy

it's a sweet lens. only problem is working distance. about 6'' from sensor plane to subject. the 100-5 is about 11''. my vivitar 105 at 1:1 is about 8'' long , so i'm 3-4'' from the end of the lens to subject

Roy, I wouldn't need to go to six inches. What happens when I shoot at 12" to 15".. Freddy

u simply get less of a macro.. not 1:1.. its the same as stepping back with any lens u get less magnification and more in the frame..

the lens being a macro lens is a bit slow to go thru its focusing compared to a none macro lens.. there isnt a sharper lens on the planet thow.. trade offs freddy.. trade offs.. he he

i have a few sample pics if u want them..

If you could send a macro shot that would be great.
Another question: Alan refers to "full exif" in his photo galleries. Does this refer to jpeg photos. Does full exif mean full properties information about each picture, which his p base galleries also do supply.
Trog, does the Sigma 50 2.8 ex macro have a good depth of field. It seems so from the two pics of the young girl you sent me. Freddy

a 100% housefly crop.. ugly picture but it give an idea of what the lens can do..

as to your dof question i was gonna say it depends on the lens opening but that one is at F3.5 so relatively speaking it does..

some software strips exif info some records more than others..

if u right click and select save as on the pics i posted u should be able to see the exif info once downloaded..

take note the fly is at F22.. dof is a major problem with close macros.. F22 is an attempt to get the fly all in focus and it still fails..

if u want shallow dof with the girl picture u need a lens with a longer focal length.. trade offs again freddy.. he he

trog

ps.. full frame fly at about 1:1..
