I picked up one of these: MEIKE MK-320 I-TTL HSS Master FLash Speedlite for Nikon j1 J2 J3 D750 D550 D810 D610 D7100 D7200 D5300 D5100 D5200 D5000 D3300 D3200 D3100 | MeiKe Store

Works in manual mode only with Pentax. But it is both cheap and small. Plus it swivels in both directions, making it perhaps the most flexible of all small flashes. For me, manual mode only is not an issue.

YMMV

Why did you not get the Pentax Version of that Flash?

The link I provided shows that a "Pentax version" is not available.
So I specified the Nikon version, which is a system I use together with my Pentax.
As I said, it works only in manual mode on Pentax.

Surprised that only one person here has mentioned a Yongnuo. Get the Yongnuo 560IV.

Yongnuo YN560-IV Speedlite YN-560IV B&H Photo Video

Really cheap but a powerful flash. It's all manual and it's great for learning flash, light and controlling it.

Would also pick up a pack of eneloops for the flash.

Panasonic Eneloop Pro Rechargeable AA Ni-MH K-KJ17KHCA4A B&H
I have a 560 III and I also have a K-3II. The problem is the hump below the flash will not allow the flash to be mounted safely on the camera. If I will push it, it's either I will damage the flash or the camera. Is the mount of the 560IV different from the 560III? Can the flash be mounted properly without damaging either the camera or the flash? I hope you guys can help. I'm looking for one I could use on my K-3II.

Old flash units with voltage protector

I use vintage flash units. There are hundreds on eBay. Also get a voltage protector and strobe frame. I like Sunpak brand, but they all pretty well work the same.

For manual use, set aperture at f 8.0 and shutter at 1/160. Start with flash at 1/8 and chimp as needed. Often I get good exposures right from the start at 1/8, then increase power depending on distance and lighting conditions where I am working. Strobe frame is important to raise flash 6-10 inches above camera to avoid deer-in-headlight effect. For around $100, you can get flash unit, voltage protector, and strobe frame. Start practicing and find out how easy manual flash photography really is.

The closest to the built-in flashes would be the Metz 20 C-2 and the Metz 24 AF-1 (I own both of them).
They share the same housing, the 20 is an auto thyristor fitting to any camera, the 24 is Pentax dedicated, has pTTL only and no settings, but an AF help light.

Both flashes use 2 AA cells (Eneloops work fine). They are slightly stronger than the built-in ones (1-1.5 exposure steps). The power difference between the 20 and the 24 is neglectible. Both flashes can be tilted (not rotated), but are not strong enough to make good use of this feature. The 20 is cheaper than the 24.

Metz may have replaced these flashes by newer models.

Has anyone tried a yongnou 460II on the K-3II? I can't use my 560II because of the hump under the flash in front of the mount. I would like to know if the 460II will work with the k-3II. Thanks.

The way the 460II mount looks is it will fit. It doesn't have the same bulge in front of the mount the same as the 560II. However, what I would like to know is if it will fire/sync with the K-3II. From what I've read in another thread, rokinons have a problem with new Pentax cameras. That's why I'm asking if the 460II will work with the K-3II.

The Rokinison thread was about P-TTL primarily I think. It is my thinking that the Yongnou is less likely to have a problem since it is not trying for P-TTL compatibility.

As for the 560 - I assume the front is too low and runs into the Pentaprism? It seems to be quite a bit forward compared to a 460ii and the various Pentax and Metz flashes that are known to work.

Yes the 560 hits the pentaprism. But the first 560II had sync issues with k-5II when it came out. Based on yongnou's explanation, the had to replace a small board to be compatible with Pentax. I wonder if the 460II wouldn't have that problem considering that it's an older model.

My letter to Yongnou:

Hi,

I have a yongnou 560II which I use with my Pentax k-5II. However, due to the hump on the K-3II the 560II cannot be mounted on it. I'm looking at purchasing a yongnou 460II for my k-3II. Will this flash unit work with my k-3II? I hope you can help. Thanks.

to me
Dear User,

Thanks for your email!
At present, YONGNUO products are mainly designed and developed for Canon, Nikon and YONGNUO devices. For we haven't tested YONGNUO products with Pentax K-5II or K-3II, we are not sure if they are compatible. If necessary, we kindly suggest you to take your camera to a physical store to test with YONGNUO speedlites before purchase.
Thank you very much for your great support for YONGNUO products! If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact us again.

Best regards,

YONGNUO

Now what do we buy?

I have a Sunpak Auto322 flash from my film days on my Pentax MX, that I have used a few times on my recently bought K20D. Now after some research I learn that my trusty 322 could fry the K20D through the hotshoe. So if I use a flash bracket and the cable from 322 into the PC port on the K20D am I also endangering the K20D?

That or I get voltage protector for the flash so it can't backfeed high voltage into the hotshoe.

I just checked the voltage output at the hotshoe mount on my Sunpak Auto322, and I get 175v to 179v. At first I thought that would be only when the flash fires, but that value is present whenever the flash is on. So,...no more 322 on my K20D.

I use an old NIKON SB-20 from the 1980s in AUTO mode with the camera in aperture or manual mode. No P-TTL of course but it works perfectly! Even better than my Pentax 360FGZ! It also has bounce flash.
