Obviously I touched a nerve here! I called it ugly because from the image on B&H, it looks to be 2 mismatched blocks of plastic screwed together. Never said it didn't work for its purpose!

Nikon SB-30 has got several advantages over AF280T - it's smaller, much lighter, and has shorter recycle time. Moreover, Nikon uses single CR123A battery instead of four AAs, what saves weight. Sure, Pentax' GN is 28, almost twice as much as Nikon's (16), so this is your call to select higher GN or small and light device.

P.S. AF280T has got tilt&swivel, don't know if Nikon has got it.

I found another option... One that looks good: the JY-610 II. Neweer and other brands are selling it. GN 27 meters, at ISO 100 and 50mm.

That photo is pretty bad. Many of us have used the flash and know what it looks like in person so we aren't swayed by that terribly perspective distorting angle.

Your explanation makes sense.
