is this normal on the 18-135 lens?

i just received my k-50 kit with the 18-135 lens and there are 3 chips on it.

looks to be brand new.

just wanted to check with the experts before i exchange it.

Hard to tell what you're referring to. Could you point out where you're seeing the chips?

If you are referring to the little white marks, there are two on the lens bayonet, and they correspond to a 3rd on the hood. They are a guide for mounting.
I dont see any other marks in your pictures, so I hope that is what you meant.

The white marks - in the two places along the rim of the lens as you've shown in your pictures - are index or alignment marks for the lens hood. There are similar marks on the hood to show where you attach the hood to the lens.

thank you both for the reply back.

yes, i was referring to the little white lines.

i never ever noticed it on my *ist DL 18-55 lens so it got me worried.

good to know it is normal and not a chip.

They do look abnormally shaped though and it's dented in too. A lot of lens will have these markings if it supports a lens hood so you can put it on easier. My Sigma lens has painted dots on it and they're not engraved/dented like that. I looked up some photos of the 18-135 and it seems like the others have straight uniform lines that are not engraved.

As already noted, those are the index marks for the hood, and they are indeed supposed to be notched / engraved. Have no fears, your lens is normal!

The just don't look as neat as the ones on my lens, there is supposed to be something there, I'm just not sure it's supposed to look like that. But the next thing is, does it really make a difference. If the lens is a good copy, you might not want to take it back because of lens sample variation and all that. On the other hand if it's not a particularly good copy, maybe you want to roll the dice again.

overall the lens i have no issues with.

i'll be keeping it.

another thing i like about this purchase and a reason i would not want to sent it back is that is was manufactured on 2/15.

i prefer to have a more recent version than something that is much older like a year old or so.

Yes if there's nothing wrong with the lens optically and performs fine, no reason to send it back

there is nothing wrong with it optically and i like the fact that the kit was produced on 2/15 considering the camera has been out for 2 years.

i just blame it on poor quality control.

the hood doesn't even align up with the marks when reversed but it's not worth the trouble to do an exchange.

it does align up when in normal use, just not reversed.
