Is it possible to AF without the Data pin?

I'd like to set Focal length by hand and to have AF. I thought it should be possible but after some tries with a very thin paper, it seems that the camera(K-5 iis) stops to AF when the Data pin is not accessible. I want to eliminate the SR error when an old TC is attached. Any other idea how to make the SR to work correctly without buying a new TC is welcome

The SR should still work correctly, but perhaps you won't get optimal stabilization. There won't be any errors. I'm not aware of any settings to override the focal length setting, but perhaps there's a hardware workaround.

Most of the Pentax community has long since given up trying to get Pentax to add a TC correction factor.

It is not just shake reduction, it also impacts the shutter speeds vs focal length function , as well as PTTL flash, and all your exit data.
But now that Pentax has come out with a TC that does things correctly there is even less likelyhood they will correct this point, or allow others to do so

Thanks for answers. I still think that the PDAF could operate without the lens info (data pin) but as I see the screw drive is introduced in KAF -1989 together with the data pin. So, on some reason Pentax AF works only when lens info is available.
