K-X + Tamron 17-50 and K-5 SMC Pentax-DA 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL WR (Image Sharpness)

I have limited budget and I was wondering what would be the IQ difference between these two configurations. I know that this is a silly question but maybe someone with real-world experience can give me some directions, before losing some money.

Why K-5 or K-50:
1. WR
2. More DR and MPX
3. Quiet shutter

Why Tamron 17-50:
If the IQ is noticeably better than K-5 (50) kit lens.

The prices in my contry are +150-200$ more than USA ebay prices.

Why I`m not buying from ebay:
1. Shipping + 60$
2. Customs tax: +55$
3. VAT + 80 $
The final proce on every ebay camera is ~ (+190$)

Best Regards

Maybe i was a bit unclear with the giving ebay prices on top post. The reason is because i`m not from USA and not many pentax sellers in my country that`s why the prices are above normal. That`s why i should choose

The tamron has a much better Iq then the kit Lens I use one on a k5 and love it but the price difference is horrendous what if you buy off this site is it still like that?

Yes, these 150-190$ are my country politics unfortunately. Maybe i will go with K5. It seems that K5 IIs are 100$ more but i decided that there is no much difference except AF.

Tamron 17-50/f2.8 is a significant upgrade to the 18-55 Kit and is usually compared against the DA*16-50/2.8 or Sigma 17-50/2.8. Mileage varies but some people even prefers the Tamron's IQ over the 16-50, not to mention the cost. For me, there are only three things the kit lens has over the Tamron WR , Quick Shift the extra 5mm at the long end. Don't get me wrong, the 18-55WR is perhaps one of the better kit lens out there but it's nowhere near the 17-50, at least from my experience.

K-x lit the entry level in flames when it was introduced. Imagine an entry level using the same sensor as (back then) semi-pro Nikon D90. It was my entry to Pentax DSLR world and eventually upgraded the 18-55 kit to the Tamron 17-50/2.8. That lens on a K-x is a formidable combo. The K5 is a significant upgrade to the K-x in many ways DR, WR, Sensor, Front/Back Dials, Top LCD, Shutter Sound, Etc. That said, in terms of IQ a K-x/Tamron 17-50 combo is more than capable of bettering a K5/18-55 combo. On the other hand, the Tamron on a K5 is in a different league.

I use a K5 Classic and don't have a K5iis but in addition to an improved AF, the iiS has the AA filter removed and produces better IQ than the Classic or event the K5II. For $100 difference I would go with the K5iiS. Cheers!

@K57XR Thank you! Very helpful post..!
I can get KIIs and after some time Tamron 17-50. In the begining i will stick with my Pentax 55-300 a SMC Pentax-A 50mm f1.7

You might want something wider than that, too. I'm sure you can find a 28mm/2.8 lens somewhere cheap. They made a boatload of them in K mount from tons of different companies. And you might be able to find an 18-55 (non-WR version) dirt cheap somewhere too.

I owned the Tamron and I found the image quality to be great but not as good as the Sigma. The build quality on the Tamron isn't as good either IMHO

Good luck!

I really like my Sigma 17-50 f2.8 too, and a direct comparison in the shop showed that it was much faster, quieter and better built than the Tamron, in my opinion. But also heavier and more expensive.

Rnizvk, is there a chance that you could find a used 16-45 in your country? That may be a cheap and satisfactory compromise.

I saw a substantial jump in image quality when I upgraded my K-x from the 18-55 kit lens to the Tamron 17-50. I did need to use the debug hack to optimise the K-x's autofocus calibration for the Tamron 17-50 though in order to get the very best from this lens. However the K-5 is a better camera to use as the base of your kit. The K-x is certainly capable of some good photos and has very low noise for a camera that was sold in the entry level pricing range, but the 14 bit raw files from a K-5 do provide more scope for computer post-processing. Tough call. I'd probably go for the K-5 as the beter investment as you will have no real need to move on from this camera in a hurry, whereas you may get the urge to replace the K-x down the track.

Thank you all for the information.
I have 2 options now, these are only avilable in my country:
1. K-5 + 18-55 WR - About 10 000 shutter acutations - 440$
2. K-5 IIs body only - 5000 shutter acutations - 450$
I think to try them to decide which one to buy

I don't quite understand your eBay problem.

You registered as located in Bulgaria, in the European Union. As far as I know, there are neither duties nor VAT for imports from other EU countries to Bulgaria. And the EU market (500+ million people) is even bigger than the US market.

I just see 2 problems:
  1. Transport fees between EU countries differ in a crazy way. Examples: inside Germany unregistered and uninsured quite cheap, registered+(lowly) insured not so much more. Between the UK and Germany unregistered is cheap, but registered expensive. Italy to Germany cost a fortune, Austria to Germany used to be the same, but recently charges seem to be ok.
  2. Language. The best offers and widest range of Pentax products you will find from Germany and the UK, sometimes also from France. But there are quite a lot of private British sellers who refuse to sell to foreign countries, often openly, sometimes by charging absolutely crazy transport fares. In some cases I asked them for the reason, and they turned out to be a bit nationalistic (their valued equipment should not end in the hands of a foreigner). I am not joking.
Your last example:
On German eBay (auctions, average prices) the K-5 + 18-55 WR would be roughly the same, the K-5 IIs could be more expensive than your offer.
