The main problem for me now is that the K-3II can get the problem at any time and the serial numbers that Pentax have announced are obviously wrong. That means the issue may occur no matter what serial number you have. Which also means that if you get the issue after your warranty has expired, you're on your own. In this case K-3 makes more sense than the K-3II. Just how different is the SR between these two cameras.
No idea what the law is in the US, but in the EU in a situation like that you are never 'on your own', past warranty expiry date. Stuff is expected to work, accounting for fair ware and tear, for 6 years I believe. As such, any manufacturing fault is covered for the period of that time, regardless whether you are still within your warranty or not.
