When Dynamic Range Saves Your Photos

Flash didn't fired during this shoot and the band i was shooting really wanted candid moments they were having during the photoshoot. +5EV at lightroom and still usable!

I know it is not the limit of the K3's dynamic range but i am blown by it!

I took a quick snap of my dad with my K-30 while he was pointing his camera at me, but because I was using an old manual lens there was no automatic exposure adjustment and I ended up with a very underexposed image. However, just pulling it up a bit and I've got a pretty nice candid family photo. It's things like this that push me away from ETTR most of the time; when the shadows are so easy to recover, why risk blowing highlights?

It's not unique to the K3.

Taken with a K5.
Original RAW exposure (ETTR) and after normalization in Photoshop

According to DxOMark, the K-5 actually has a bit more dynamic range than the K-3...14.1 Evs for the K-5 vs 13.4 Evs for the K-3.

They're both a far cry from my first DSLR. DxOMark rates my old Olympus e-410 at 10 Evs. And my first APS-C DSLR, the Canon t2i, was only rated at 11.5 Evs.

The first time I really had to push an underexposed shot on my K-5, years ago, I think my mouth literally fell open.

And from what I'm seeing on my new K-3 II, it's not meaningfully worse -- and is probably better in preserving detail.

I had the camera set for birds in the sun (1/1000th f/11) when I came across this poor fawn in the woods...

Even though DxO says the K-3 loses almost half its DR at ISO 3200, I think it did a pretty good job.

I've found that even the K50 has great response to underexposure, but over-exposure tends to not recover well. I've started to underexpose a bit more often for that reason.

I believe the K-30 has the same sensor, and I agree with that sentiment. ETTR be damned.

I believe that this is the case with most sensors, in regards to blown highlights. I've also gotten into the habit of underexposing my photos from my K-30, knowing that it will still look good when I brighten it back up.

Sometimes when I'm shooting with my Panasonic LX100, which has an m43 sensor, I fall into the same routine, and then I get disappointed when the pictures end up being a little more noisy than I'm used to with my K-30. So with my LX100 I usually try to dial in a more exact exposure.
