Pentax Ist DS or K100D?

I was showing my dad some pictures from the Ist D's CCD sensor and he said the colors really reminded him of the film days so he wants to pick one up to play around with for cheap.

My question is should he go with the Ist DS for the bright pentaprism viewfinder, or the K100D for the shake reduction?

You need the K100d Super for shake reduction, I think. Both that and the DS are really nice cameras, simple but with beautiful output. I favor the DS because you can switch out the focus screen (and that is the one I kept) but I don't think you could go wrong either way.

K100D also produces very good images ..
Unless your a collector or seriously want a istDS , the K100D is a better camera all around .
You can take it to the next level with a K200D or for that nostalgia a K10D ...
In fact with the prices of pentax cameras on the used market all over the place, I would be looking at the K10D or K20D for a touch of what was ..
I own a istD simply because it is the first digital from pentax ( SLR ) ..

But if taking pictures matters , the K10D or K20D are the cameras to be looking at , they should be priced low enough now with all the recent discounts on the K50 ...

K20D is CMOS, and the K10D just didn't seem to have the same color rendering as the ist or the k100D.

The K20d is CMOS, I'd stay away from that. But the K10 or K200 have a 10 MP CCD sensor with which some people worked magic. The K10 is a lot bigger, though.

The real question to ask is whether having the TTL capability and flash metering with legacy lenses is important. If so, get a DS otherwise get the K100

The K200D produced wonderful color , but I dont know if the K10D is inferior , I think you need to tweak the settings till you find something you like .
When it comes to AA batteries , I would say the K200D produced the best pictures ...
In 6.1MP , you simply cant go past the K100D in a Pentax , if only Pentax had made a grip for the K100D .. ( Well , I guess you can go K200D )

As for the K20D , I like it enough to own two of them ... ( I dont know why people dont like it ? )

IMHO the K10D was hands down the best CCD DSLR that Pentax ever made. Having owned two K100D's, a K100D Super and a K2000, neither of these match the DR or color rendition of the K10D. The features of the K10D will allow your father to become as serious of a photographer as he wants to be. The K10D was the Advanced DSLR of 2007 for a reason.

There is definitely some pixie dust on the old Sony 6.1 CCD. Give it a Helios 44-2 and do some magic tricks for everyone.

I've owned and used both the K100D and K200D and prefer the K200D by far.
And, yes, there is some special rendering by these sensors. Really worth it these days with prices so low, but even worth it "back then."

K10D had wonderful rendering of colours and had very low noise at low ISO. I'm not convinced that the later Pentax with more advanced sensors produces better images, they have more Mp and lower noise at high ISO - the K10D is not useful above ISO 800, but at ISO 100 - 400 the K10D produces stellar images. Many of my best images are taken with the K10D, and I say that they are good images because of the colours. The K20D uses a Samsung CMOS and it's quite different in output. The K10D is very much like the *ist D in terms of handling (twin dials, HyperProgram, pentaprism), but the K10D is bigger and this is a downside but weather sealing and shake reduction is indeed a plus, plus the option of using lenses with built in AF motors.

Never owned the *istD, but the K100dSuper and K10D still live fondly in my heart - both for different reasons. I had the K100Dsuper for longer and probably shot a much variety of photos with it. I was just going through old photos today (which brought me here actually) and worked up one that I shot with it in Mexico... It was (and still is) a superb camera. This was shot with the K100D Super and M50/1.4...

here is the shot straight-out-of-camera if interested:
