Do Canikon even make a medium format system? If so, we're sort of comparing apples to oranges (surely the 645Z should beat any 35mm full-frame DSLR around), but Pentax should take all the praise it can get.

No, but PhaseOne, Hasselblad and Leica do.

*nods* Pentax's big success here, from what I've read, is that it seems to offer little if any worse image performance and equal or superior handling at about a third of the price. I did watch at least to the point where he said he got the 645Z because he needed medium format and it was affordable.

I don't know what the Canon and Nikon full-frame (35mm) flagships cost, but there's a lesson here for Pentax in its own success, if it can manage it. No, I don't think you can build a top-ranking FF DSLR for a third of the cost of a Canikon flagship, but if you can significantly undercut them with a camera that's sweeter to handle and offers equivalent quality of results, you're a long way to rocking the socks off the photography world.

There are always rumors of Canon or Sony entering the medium format business.

Sony did enter, its their sensor is it not?
