Because the AF500 costs a lot less, I suppose.
Precisely. I'm trying to get a toss in the car kit, based on inexpensive but decent equipment, since I work downtown and have to park in a somewhat seedy area. It's not the worst place, but I would rather not have $1,000 of gear stolen either, whether someone grabs my tote or steals it out of the car.

I want something I can take along all the time, since there have been several times I've said "I wish I had my camera". I started with the tiny lightweight *ist DS, and one of my MF lenses. My hope is replace my A50 with a DA40, and AF500.

Ther is a 500 on fleabay with BIN for $99.95. Looks new and the seller is not fleecing you on the shipping either:

Pentax AF-500FTZ Professional TTL Flash PZ1P ZR Film - eBay (item 370062787032 end time Jun-29-08 06:44:16 PDT)

I considered snapping it up but am saving up for a FA31

If it's still there in two more days(that's payday for me), it's mine. Thanks!

Update: I got a used Pentax K100D a week or so ago. Hard getting used to AA's, but it's all good.

My only complaint against my K100D is that I usually run out of battery power after 100 or so exposures.
You might have a bad cell or charger. I get a few hundred easy on a good set. Not much flash use, though.

The thing is, the same batteries will last for considerably longer in my ist DS. I don't know if I cause SR to work overtime or what, but given the same set of batteries, fully charged, the ist DS typically gets about 200 more exposures than the K100D. It's ok, I mostly learned to live with it. For me the K100D(and the ist DS) is what I depend on when I need something for really low light situations, and I just got an aftermarket LiPO battery pack for the K100D that works great, so not-so-major problem solved.

Personally I think that most 6MP DSLRs are somewhat underrated, but especially the K100D. 6MP has always delivered great 8x10s in my opinion, and that's most of what I print, since I haven't been able to upgrade to a larger format printer, and most lab 8x10s cost a fair amount more. Currently I use the K100D now mostly for things like photographing events for newsletters, etc. The images used are typically printed 5x7 or smaller, to fit into the text so more MP would be wasted anyway.

I've had excellent luck using Energizer Lithium e2 batteries. They can be had from Sam's Club for about $20 for a three pack of four.

Sanyo Eneloops for my K100D!

I'm upgrading to a K20D soon from my K10D, then sell off my K10D... but my K100D won't be going anywhere. I intend to use the K100D as my walkaround/backup to the K20D... (reason for the upgrade, I got spoiled with the quality of high ISO shots with my K100D... the K10D is a great camera, but most of what I shoot is lowlight...)
