I can't compare the K-50 and the K-S2, but I just got the K-50 a few days ago. I'm a camera novice and have been pleasantly surprised with how easy it is to use. I got the K-50 with two kit lenses for $404 on Amazon and I think that was a great deal. I saw the K-S2 deal at Costco shortly after purchasing, but decided I would rather save the extra money it would cost and save up for another lens like the 50mm prime. I think the K-50 is a great first DSLR. At least it has been so far for me. And it is a pretty good size. I have small hands, but I think my dad (who also has fat fingers) would have no problem holding it and working it.
Glad you like it!

I've decided to definitely go k50 for my Dad as well. I'm going to marry it up with the 18-135, as this should cover what he needs to do on a day to day basis, but I'll maybe grab him a prime too, eg. da35. Think I might leave out the 50mm manual/A settings for now.

My Dad is quite tech savvy, though. He bought an IPad long before most people, and was trying to use photoshop ten years ago. I think people might be right that going for manual lenses will be a step too far, but I foresee him wanting to change lenses, especially when he sees what he can do with a 50mm prime.
I know plenty of very tech savvy people (I'm a software developer), and very few of them would translate their interest in gadgets to an interest in a dslr. They mostly use the best quality compact or bridge cameras, or their phones. A few are serious photographers.

I hope your dad really enjoys whatever you choose to get him, and that it doesn't strain the limited finances you mentioned if he wants to fill out the range a bridge camera would have offered out of the box.

Maybe get him a nice 55-300 DAL used to cover the long end in advance (or a 16-85 plus the wr 55-300 to cover the wider end and longer end with Wr)

I would say definitely K-50 from your explanations.
I tried similarly priced Canikons in a shop and the grip is just too small (I'm also a teen...)
Pentax grips feels so much better in hands.
I have no problem using old K-Mount lenses and M42 lenses (M42 with $5 adapter from ebay)

I'm very tech savvy (Web dev, programming, robotics, building computers, etc.) and I've really translated that interest into DSLRs.

Not saying none of them do... just that it's not an automatic "if you're interested in gadgets, you'll want a DSLR"

One more thing:
What is this mysterious K-S3 you are talking about?
Or do you mean K-3
