It is just a matter of component arrangement and optimisation. In fact, there is no real "front" or "back" for the silicon arrangement!

that is an optimization, IMO.

IIRC, it's more costly, and sony thinks that they can lower the price of this method of manufacture..

The new structure (on the right) is almost exactly like the cell's in human eye...

The structure of the human (and nearly all non segmented eyes) have nerves/blood vessels on the surface of the retina.
