What is "Front" and what's "Back"? Funny..

It is just a matter of component arrangement and optimisation. In fact, there is no real "front" or "back" for the silicon arrangement!

except that sony has rearranged the way they layer the pieces of a CMOS wafer, allowing for more light to reach the photosensitive area.

that is an optimization, IMO.

IIRC, it's more costly, and sony thinks that they can lower the price of this method of manufacture..

Great!! The new structure (on the right) is almost exactly like the cell's in human eye...

Lens>> photonic reaction "chamber">> signal pick up electrodes >> Wiring to the "brain".

How's this? (click for full size) It's still a K20, though, 'cause 'shopping text into that curve is a bitch!

The structure of the human (and nearly all non segmented eyes) have nerves/blood vessels on the surface of the retina. Light passes through these layers before striking the rods and cones that give us sight. The Sony arrangement is one where the pixel size can stay large without having to compromise the electrical connection necessary.
I quote: "As a byproduct of evolution, the ganglion cells lie innermost in the retina while the photoreceptive cells lie outermost. Because of this arrangement, light must first pass through the thickness of the retina before reaching the rods and cones. However it does not pass through the epithelium or the choroid (both of which are opaque)."

Even better, look at the illustration here Retina - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
