Good News for you... and bad... Ricoh camera repair is a flat fee and will cost about $250 in USA. Bad news... It is $250.00. But the whole camera gets a nice cleaning and inspected and repaired for other flaws... so .. there is always that.

I know this because I have a broken rear LCD screen and need it replaced, but the cost of my K-5ii to be fixed is basically the cost of the K-5 used and probably the K-5ii and K-5iis when the new FF camera is released. SO>>>>> I am not fixing mine.

I would NOT take it apart if you are not technically minded... I cleaned the mode dial on my K-r and it was a ton of tiny wires, circuit boards, and zillions of screws. Now take that and add weather seals. Yeah no thanks. That said, if you break it, you will be sending it to repair anyways...

I think that's what is going to have to happen to mine too... I can't spend ~$250 just to get back Aperture Priority Mode! I don't know when's the last time that I used "Programmed Auto", so it's not going to be a huge deal, just a minor annoyance.

Hey, I've got a deal for you: I'll send you my "Manual Only" K-5IIs, since you prefer it that way, and you send me one of yours!

Oh well, it was a thought anyway... I guess I'll just fine-tune my Manual shooting techniques!

I don't really want to spend another $250 on photography right now, especially since I just replaced my K-5IIs already, after my previous one got stolen.

That sucks.
K-5s and K5iis' don't seem to like you.

You're right! I guess it is time to upgrade to the K-3. I see that it's on sale right now at B&H for only $669 with 50mm 1.8 and flash... But just because it's on sale doesn't mean I have the money for it.

Let's hope someone with some expertise with Pentax K-5 series Mode Dials comes along... If it is merely "broken" then it might be something fixable.

I am in the same situation. I really want the K-3, and now my K-5ii has the broken LCD, I do have justification to get it... but... I need som extra cash and my house is still screaming at my wallet for more money. Maybe sometime after christmas.

AFAIK the mode dial properties are the same underneath. It is really a plastic knob and underneath (other side) of the plastic knob is a partial disk with a set of metal feelers. On the other side is another metal disk and a circuit board.

Likely either the teeth are misaligned, broken, or one/both of the disks is/are dirty.

This is actually how the contacts are designed on the SDM lenses too for adjusting focal length... metal feelers and a contact board/ring

Interesting! Any idea how easy it is to remove the mode dial?

What do you think hammers were invented for?
Oh you mean not destructively...

Yes, the FF looks good, and all that, but I don't need one that badly that I take a hammer to my perfectly good K-5!

If you kill it with a Hammer, you can't justify your new upgrade to the K-FF! Just keep it around for your sap story when you have to explain why you purchased a new camera.

I'm afraid the FF is several years down the road, if at all... I'm not at all hampered by my current equipment, the K-5IIs is amazingly capable.
