HELP! K-5IIs can't change the Shooting Mode!

I just turned on my Pentax K-5IIs this morning to take some pictures, and lo and behold, my mode dial was set to "P" mode, but the camera shows that it's in "M" mode! I can change the shutter speed, aperture, and ISO, and all the other settings I can think of, but I cannot get it out of "M" mode! I tried turning the dial to Video, User Mode, and Auto, but nothing changes. I restarted it a few times, and even pulled out the battery while it was on. Then I got out a freshly charged battery, and tried that. Still nothing! So I thought to try a Pentax lens instead of the Sigma 17-70 that was on it. Still nothing!

I'm not sure what to do! What in the world could have caused this? It's not some internal setting is it? I haven't changed any Menu settings recently that I know of, and even if was a Menu setting, I can't imagine that making the Mode dial completely worthless!

Thankfully, it's in Manual, and I can use it; not Auto, or something, but it's still rather disconcerting! Does anyone have any suggestions?

Take the battery out, then put it back in?

Can you access menus and everything like it is just normally in M?
Is the mode dial making any weird clicks?

Yes, like I said, everything else seems to work, the only problem is, when turning the Mode dial, nothing happens!

I don't notice any noises, or anything really abnormal...

Now trying to be helpful.
After a google search this problem in not uncommon.
Most threads suggest a factory reset.
Is your firmware fully updated, if not some threads suggest updating it to the latest version.
Adam says in another thread:

It's not uncommon to hear complaints about broken mode dials, as evidenced by some of the "similar threads" linked below. In your case, it's probably a manufacturing defect, though I'd say that it's possible to break the mode dial due to wear and tear also.

That is a bummer! I've had a few strange experiences with my K5IIs, but usually they have been related to the SD card for some unknown reason? Using a different card has always corrected the problem.

This may not apply in your case but around here it is standard procedure to remove the lens and check for any blockage that might be jamming up the hardware or nibbling on the firmware....

Regards & keep us advised on your progress in solving this problem.

Just checked the firmware, and it's 1.07. I presume that's the latest?

Yes that's the latest.
You could try a factory reset?
Or the mode dial is broken and I'm not sure how easy that is to repair.

How do you go about a factory reset? I did the "Reset" under Menu 3 of the Tools menu, is that what is meant by factory reset? (It didn't help any..)

There isn't actually a factory reset only a ACTAFRACAOAPCFANUR (As Close To A Factory Reset As Currently Available On A Pentax Camera For A Normal User Reset) (https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/115-pentax-k-5/226161-factory-reset.html#ixzz3pDeMIf7D) which is the reset option, it looks like your mode dial needs a physical repair

That is very bad news... And Cris Cam is out of business now?

P.S. I like your acronym, it's been a while since I saw one that was that long!

I found it in the thread linked.
I Googled around and couldn't find anything about a DIY repair.
If it was my camera I would pull off the mode dial and see if anything is visibly broken.

Well, then I have to figure out how to pull of the dial, I don't think it just pops off, does it?

I don't think so, it probably involves dismantling most of the camera.
If someone with experience in camera repairs sees this they might be able to help.

Looked into USA repair (Ricoh Imaging Americas Corporation - Service & Repair).
It would probably cost around $300 to repair
Looked at KEH repair (https://www.keh.com/page/repair-pricing).
It would probably cost around $250 to repair

I hope you find something (like an excuse to buy a K-3...) that will work out for you.
